ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH is cool. is for you. is happening! is an anagram for “Healing real frail eccentricities.”

People to See Faculty Subset of Grads Pedro Domingos (pedrod) Dan Weld (weld) Steve Tanimoto (tanimoto) Henry Kautz (kautz) Oren Etzioni (etzioni) Alon Levy (alon) Subset of Grads Tessa Lau (tlau) Steve Wolfman (wolf) Corin Anderson (corin) An Hai Doan (anhai) Adam Carlson (carlson) If you want to do research in AI, you’re going to have to see one of these people. So, memorize all their names and e-mail addresses right now! OK, now that that’s done, let’s see what some of the stuff happening in AI research is.

AI Research Adaptive Web Sites - Corin Anderson Data Integration - An Hai Doan Natural Language Analysis - Adam Carlson SMARTedit: Intelligent UI - Tessa Lau, Steve Wolfman Ever clicked on the “information for public/press link” on the CS home page? Why is it on your version of the CS home page? What, you mean cs. doesn’t automatically create a personalized view of its web site? Data integration is putting together different people’s databases on the web. Heard of XML? Makes DI a moot point, right? There are already 3 competing XML standards just for encoding real estate information. XML just pushes the problem to a different level, and An Hai is addressing it on that level with ML techniques. Ever asked a question in class and had the teacher answer a totally different question? Why does this sort of miscommunication happen? Adam is using AI techniques to study and (at least in written texts) maybe solve this problem.

SMARTedit Automate repetitive editing tasks reformatting text translating between file formats (HTML, TeX, …) extracting information from text Programming by demonstration solution watch the user’s actions generalize examples to a program execute the program on the remaining text

SMARTedit Projects: Programming Improve SMARTedit’s expressiveness and stretch its capabilities with new version spaces. Port SMARTedit to new domains where it will see wider use: SMARTemacs, SMARTword, or even SMARTdraw! We would like to add a large number of new version spaces to SMARTedit. We need people experienced in or willing to learn python for this task. We want SMARTedit to get wide practical and research use, so we’d like to port it to several new domains. Emacs and Word seem like good first choices; we’re looking particularly for people experienced in using/programming these environments (or willing to learn). How about a SMARTedit applet for Web demos? Also, we’d like to try to hit brand new domains. How about a SMART drawing system?

SMARTedit Projects: Experimentation Scenario creation and usability testing: Complete various editing tasks with (and without) SMARTedit. Gather emacs and Word macros as task examples. Voice recognition and verbal narration: Find effective ways to record and use verbal interactions with SMARTedit. (Make people talk to their computers) Data analysis: What patterns do people use in editing tasks? How do utterances correlate with actions? What intelligent UI modes are people willing to use?

(We’ll keep you posted.) Dogfood Send us mail if you’d like to use SMARTedit when it becomes available on your favorite editor! (We’ll keep you posted.) Tessa Lau tlau@cs.washington.edu Steve Wolfman wolf@cs.washington.edu
