The Church and Traditions Attitudes toward traditions vary greatly among religious people; some desire to change anything that could be called traditional, while others hold blindly to every tradition. Scripturally speaking, traditions can fall into one of three categories: 1) Inspired traditions handed down by the apostles and prophets of Christ. 2) Expedient traditions which aid faithful Christians to habitually obey God’s laws. 3) Traditions of men which replace or nullify God’s word. The first category of traditions needs to be carefully followed, the second needs to be appreciated but examined, the third should be completely rejected.

Inspired Traditions God's word has been handed down to us by the apostles and prophets. (1 Corinthians 11:2) We are to keep these traditions. (2 Thessalonians 2:15; 3:6) And pass them on to others. (Psalm 78:1-5; 2 Timothy 2:2)

Expedient Traditions Expedient habits & customs develop from continued efforts to obey God. (Luke 4:16; Acts 16:13; 17:1-2) We must make certain that every tradition is both lawful and expedient (1 Corinthians 6:12;10:23)

Traditions of Men Designed by men to replace or nullify God's word (Isaiah 29:13; Matthew 15:9; Mark 7:7; Titus 1:14.) Their appeal: Escape from duty (Matt. 15:1-10; Mark 7:1-13) Comfort of the familiar. Avoid study and thought (2 Timothy 2:15) Appear religious (Colossians 2:8, 20-23).

What Should Be My Attitude Toward Religious Traditions? Love and keep those traditions handed down from the apostles. Appreciate lawful traditions and customs that help me obey God. Reject traditions that replace God’s laws or are counterproductive.
