CARBON NEUTRAL ECO-VILLAGE IN THE HIMALAYAN ECOSYSTEM: INDIA@COP22 CARBON NEUTRAL ECO-VILLAGE IN THE HIMALAYAN ECOSYSTEM: Blending traditional and modern adaptive practices Sustainable Lifestyle = Positive Climate Action www.indiaatcop22.org

Immediate Challenges INDIA@COP22 INDIA MANIPUR STATE Manipur, an Eastern Himalayan state, is rich in biodiversity with 76.1% forest coverage. Erratic rainfall patterns over the years have led to drying up of natural water sources resulting in scarcity of water for household consumption and irrigation. Lack of irrigation water restricts farmers in the state to cultivating a single crop when it rains. Depletion of natural resources coupled with degradation of forests threaten the state’s rich biodiversity. 22,327 sq.km. TGA 28.56 Lakh population 24.5% decadal growth Forest Coverage map of Manipur www.indiaatcop22.org

Phayeng– A Model Carbon Positive Eco Village Project INDIA@COP22 Phayeng– A Model Carbon Positive Eco Village Project Showcase for combination of traditional and modern climate adaptation practices Mainstreaming of ecosystem based adaptation philosophy inthe mountain ecosystem Carbon positive level achieved by increasing the net sequestration of greenhouse gases Enhancing ecosystem resilience, minimizing climate risk and increasing adaptive capacity Supported by National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change since April ‘16 Part of National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem Protected forest at Phayeng Phayeng village in Manipur www.indiaatcop22.org

Strategy INDIA@COP22 Sustainable management of natural resources Developing irrigational canal and enhance command area Integrated mountain farming and introduction of climate smart agriculture Enhancing renewable energy and energy efficiency Capacity building and human resource development (skill development and market linkage through Farmer Producer Organizations) Development of a village knowledge centre for indigenous conservation practices and using eco-system for sustainable livelihood Development of a community based eco-health resort for yoga, natural living and safe treated drinking water supply Degraded forest in Phayeng River of Phayeng, the only source of water for drinking & irrigation www.indiaatcop22.org

Activities INDIA@COP22 Aerial view of Phayeng Village CAT at 218 Ha degraded forest 100,000 tree plantation (medicinal plants) Widening of river and water body for 218,640 cubic metres Construction of masonry dam and pick up dam 20 km of canal 12 month crop cultivation across 528 Ha command area Climate resilient agriculture and horticulture at 500 ha Capacity building of 500 farmers Community piggery and poultry using scientific approach Bio gas intervention at community level Replaced firewood fuels with improved cook stoves Solar park intervention Village indigenous knowledge centre Health resort & living with nature Safe drinking water facilities Demonstration on project learning to other villages Aerial view of Phayeng Village www.indiaatcop22.org

Forest protection & afforestation : 218 ha Activities INDIA@COP22 Command area 527.9 ha Settlement 140.9 ha Water body : 7.29 ha Volume : 218,640 cu.m. Forest protection & afforestation : 218 ha www.indiaatcop22.org

INDIA@COP22 Way Ahead Phayeng village could serve as a successful template for community-owned sustainable ecosystem-based adaptation, one that employs a blend of traditional and modern approaches to achieve climate resilience www.indiaatcop22.org
