Culture and Religion of the Middle Colonies By: Catarina Kim, Nick Kim, and Jahnavi Kirtane

Ways of Life In The Middle Colonies The middle colonies had the most diversity out of the other colonies, so they had many different cultures and religions. Most people were farmers, because the climate and soil was very good for farming. Merchants sold things that the farmers grew. They had a free market economy (the government doesn’t control how much you trade and how much you charge). Philadelphia and New York were busy ports and trade centers. There were a lot of artisans and laborers that stayed near the ports and centers.

Ways of life continued... People ate things like

Education The education in the middle colonies was different from the other colonies. Sponsored by different religions. William Penn and Benjamin Franklin wanted Pennsylvania to have education. Pennsylvania was the most involved in Education. Boys learned either a skill or trade. Girls were tutored at home (they learned about social and household things. Social class was important. You could also learn classical languages, history and literature, math, and science.

Populations and Major Cities Populations in 1770: Pennsylvania: 240,057 New York: 162,920 New Jersey: 143,117 Delaware: 35,496 Major cities are… Germantown New York City Philadelphia Albany Interesting Facts: The Middle Colonies had the most diverse group of people living in it. Pennsylvania had the larger population than New York back then, and they still do.

Toleration in Middle colonies During the 17th century, when William Penn, a Quaker, gave full religious freedom in Pennsylvania, other religions like Calvinists, Jews, Moravians, Lutherans and Catholics followed religious tolerance of the Quakers in Pennsylvania. Even they had a religious freedom, they didn’t have a freedom in all parts of it, like in government; only Catholics could vote.

Religion The Middle Colonies were the most ethnically and religiously diverse of the thirteen original colonies because of the influence of their Polish, English, Dutch, French and German origins. In the middle colonies they had religious freedom, so their religion were all mixed. Delaware- Catholics New York- Most of them were Protestant New Jersey- Catholic and Protestant Pennsylvania- All religions mixed
