PACER provides innovative resources for students, parents, educators, and others, and recognizes bullying as a serious community issue that impacts education, physical and emotional health, and the safety and well-being of students. PACER.org/Bullying: This is the portal page for parents and educators to access bullying resources, which include educational toolkits, awareness toolkits, contest ideas, promotional products and more. PACERTeensAgainstBullying: Created by and for teens, this website is a place for middle and high school students to find ways to address bullying, to take action, to be heard, and to own an important social cause. PACERKidsAgainstBullying: A creative, innovative and educational website designed for elementary school students to learn about bullying prevention, engage in activities and be inspired to take action

Advocacy and Self-advocacy Section Two Advocacy and Self-advocacy What is it and what does it have to do with bullying prevention? PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center ©2018

Take the Quiz How do you recognize someone who bullies? Size: The person bullying is bigger than the person being bullied Gender: Girls don’t bully, only boys do. Behavior: They do something that hurts or harms another person. Age: It’s always older kids picking on younger kids. PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center ©2018

What is Advocacy and Self-Advocacy? Looking out for other students who are being bullied, are vulnerable to being hurt or harmed, or are isolated from other students. Self-Advocacy Being a “self-advocate” means speaking up for yourself, telling people what you need, and taking action. PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center ©2018

What If I Am Bullying? Understand that your actions are hurting someone else. Know that it is NEVER okay to hurt someone else. Realize that everyone deserves respect, that differences are a part of our world. Talk with someone: your parents, a teacher or trusted adult, and ask for their help. It helps to understand the reasons that bullying occurs, and to then think about new ways to respond. Bullying is about behavior and behavior can change. PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center ©2018

What If I’m Being Bullied? Know that you do not deserve what is happening. Tell someone: your parents, a teacher or trusted adult. Develop a plan, with the help of an adult, about how you can respond to the situation. Decide—with the help of an adult—how other students might help. Know your rights: most states have laws against bullying. PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center ©2018

What If I Witness Bullying? There are lots of things you can do. Do what feels safe and ok to you. Ask the kid who is bullying to stop. Not join in. Help get them away from the situation. Tell an adult. Let them know that no one deserves to be bullied. Give a sincere compliment to the person being bullied. Ask others to stand against bullying. Opinion Poll: What Should You Do If You See Bullying? Not join in Help get them away from the situation Tell an adult Let them know no one deserves to be bullied All of the above! PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center ©2018
