Fig. 1 Ribbon diagram of the three-dimensional structure of toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1). TSST-1 is a two-domain molecule, designated A (β grasp fold) and B (OB fold). The domain for TSST-1 binding to MHC II molecules is listed as the low affinity interaction site; the listed high affinity site is not present in TSST-1 but is present in a number of other superantigens, including streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin C and staphylococcal enterotoxin A. The site on TSST-1 for binding to TCRVβ is indicated as the top back of the toxin. For other superantigens the TCRVβ site is on the top front of the toxin, for example staphylococcal enterotoxins B and C and streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A.
