DoN Wiring Information Systems Presented By: Tom Kowalski Assistant Program Manager, Systems Engineering Aircraft Wiring Support Equipment Commodity NAES Lakehurst, NJ

Overview AWSEC Overview AWSEC Integration Facility Aircraft Wiring Information System (AWIS) Just-in-Time Wiring Information System (JITWIS)

AWSEC Mission To provide technical (RDT&E), logistic, production, procurement and in-service support to Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIRSYSCOM), relevant to Organizational and Intermediate Level Aircraft Wiring Support Equipment

AWSEC Designated Procurement Activity (DPA) for all aircraft wiring Common Support Equipment (CSE) Objectives –Identify and provide common support solutions –Influence wiring systems and design for supportability –Ensure SE is user-friendly, cost-effective, and supportable –Provide proper SE and and tooling to increase repair reliability –Ensure SE training and logistic support are in place

AWSEC Integration Facility Modern 1500 sq ft. wiring system integration laboratory facility within the NAVAIR Aircraft Platform Integration (API) facility Designed for the development and testing of aircraft and Support Equipment (SE) wiring system support. Integration of new support technologies into legacy wiring systems. Integration of legacy support technologies with new wiring systems technologies. Integration of support and maintenance Information Technology (IT) into maintenance processes.

AWSEC Integration Facility Dedicated AWSEC integration facilities are available for: –Off-board diagnostic wiring test systems –Development of standardized fiber optic testing and support –Development of cable harness repair and manufacturing capabilities at the OMA and IMA –MIL-STD-1553 and MIL-STD-1760 data bus testing and integration –Improved Micro-Miniature (2M) techniques and technologies –Development and integration of Information Technology Aircraft Wiring Information System (AWIS) Just-In-Time Wiring Information System (JITWIS) e-Suite

AWIS Characteristics An Information Management system serving as the comprehensive repository for all major aircraft wiring and fiber optic system component and associated repair tooling data Wiring System Components: –Harness Assemblies –Cable Assemblies –Wire/Cable Types –Connectors –Terminal Lugs –Splices/Ferrules –Shielding Materials –Contacts –Power –Coax/Triax/Shielded –Thermocouple –Fiber Optics –Standard / Jewel Termini

Identification of: –Crimping tools Positioners Die Sets –Installing / Removal tools –Unwired removal tools –Inspection gages –Adapter tools –Wire/cable strippers –Strap wrenches –Connector Holding Tools –Banding tools Implementation

AWIS Capabilities Provide for Life Cycle Management of aircraft wiring system support requirements –Reduce Life Cycle Costs –Maintenance Philosophies –Track and update wiring system and repair tool impacts Provides relational wiring system and tooling reports Provides specialized query and report capabilities –All Component/Tooling –Connector P/N to Reference Designator –Contact Tooling –P/N, CAGE and NSN –Special Notes –Tool Set (cost) –Harness –Spare Parts

AWIS Benefits Automates the process of defining, developing, procuring and supporting aircraft wiring system repair tool sets Easy processing of wiring system modification impacts Simplified updating of aircraft wiring system maintenance planning source data Ensures accurate wiring system repair data for development of technical manuals Flexibility of database to expand based upon user and customer needs

AWIS Continuing Efforts Internet availability –Currently in Fleet web-based Beta testing Expected Completion: 1 August –Web availability - 1 September 2002 Fiber optic module Mating connector identification module

JITWIS Requirement Description –3 initial modules Benefits Deployment Continuous Improvements

JITWIS Requirement CNO MandateCNO Mandate (Task Force WEB): –All Navy applications must be WEB-enabled and portal integrated not later than 2004 –All Navy owned applications must be converted to HTML and developed into WEB services paper to electronic mediaAircraft wiring maintenance and supportability data is migrating from paper to electronic media High production cost and long revision cycle time for paper Pubs are prohibitive for many aircraft communities Aging aviation fleetsAging aviation fleets are driving up requirements for, and criticality of, aircraft wiring maintenance

JITWIS Description An integrated system of hardware and software enabling technologies Will facilitate the seamless linkage of standardized wiring technical information repositories Will provide the ability to reliably receive and exchange desired technical information, precisely when it is needed, and in a presentation format that maximizes the utility of the technical information to the user

JITWIS Description Operation of any module within JITWIS is not dependent on any other module. The beneficial functionality of the JITWIS e-Suite is the ability of each module to intelligently interact with each other module. AWIS Reference Publications ICACRS

JITWIS e-Suite AWIS –The most dynamic and comprehensive interactive electronic database containing cross-referenced information on wiring system components and associated maintenance and repair tooling. Reference Publications –Provide a single repository for DoD and commercial documentation which can be linked throughout the JITWIS modules Intelligent Computer-Aided Cable Repair System (ICACRS) –Software program developed to assist the ATE community in the training and development of adapter cables

JITWIS Benefits Open, Scalable, Distributed Network Centric Infrastructure Single point data entry and control reduces data errors and facilitates content commonality (everyone [everywhere] on the same page) Reduced costs and cycle times for information development, printing and distribution Expandable based upon user and customer needs

AWIS Reference Publications ICACRS JITWIS Deployment Availability to USN/USMC, DoD, commercial aviation and private industry –Interactive queries via the Internet –Automatic access via linkages designed into Electronic Technical Manual (ETM) functionality –Unique customer and project requirements USCG FAA USAF NASAUSN Commercial Air Carriers

JITWIS Pre-Planned Improvements JITWIS shall undergo continuous improvements aimed at enhancing the effective delivery of critical wiring systems technical information THESE IMPROVEMENTS MAY IMPACT –Aircraft Platform Wiring Manuals –Wiring System Troubleshooting Manuals –Wiring systems inspection recording / reporting –Inclusion of Ship, Tank and other vehicle wiring systems
