Presentation transcript:

Do Now Heading: Magnetic Fields In your Journal answer the following question What makes a compass always point north? Make sure to write at least 3 complete sentences and a picture to help support your answer.

Magnetic Fields Compasses are made of a little piece of magnetized metal (The metal part is called a needle) The red end of the compass (depending on the compass you have) will always point north no matter what direction you are turning

Magnetic Fields You can think of the earth as having a large bar magnet inside of it This large bar magnet has its own magnetic field that pushes and pulls on the compass needle telling it what direction north is. In order for the north part of the compass to be attracted to it the “north pole” must be a magnetic south pole Remember opposites attract

Magnetic Fields

Magnetic Fields N S

Magnetic Field Rules 1) The always leave the north side of the magnet and go towards the south side 2) They are continuous curves that go around the magnet 3) They get weaker the farther away you move from a magnet

Magnetism Lab For the rest of the period you will complete the following lab Please follow the instruction carefully Answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper ( you will be turning these in at the end of the period)
