Aim: How did the Caste System organize Indian society? Monday – December 2, 2013 Mr. Lombardi Aim: How did the Caste System organize Indian society? Do Now: Define the word “outcast” in your own words. Why would someone be considered an outcast from society? Explain how you would treat an outcast?

Unit 4: Belief Systems

Analyze the following quote: “All religions are belief systems, but not all belief systems are religions.” What does the quote mean to you in your own words?

Belief Systems Name as many belief systems as you can think of (remember, it does not have to be a religion).

Belief Systems Did cavemen have any belief systems? Explain. Did Ancient Civilizations have any belief systems? Explain.

Copy the following words/definitions into your notebook: Caste System – consists of five separate classes (castes) of people. Brahmans – Priest class of the Caste System. Kshatriyas – warrior class. Vaisyas – herders, farmers, merchants, artisans. Sudras – servants, laborers, farm workers. Untouchables – performed the worst jobs in society. Polytheism – belief in multiple gods (more than 1).

The Caste System Origins: Rules: Began in India as part of the Hindu religion. Based on writings in the Vedas (Hindu holy book). Rules: A person was born into their caste and could not change it during his/her life (only in his/her next reincarnated life). Obeying caste rules would bring good Karma. Different caste members were not allowed to intermarry or work together. Untouchables were considered so “unclean” that they were outside the caste system (outcasts).

Activity The Caste System in India: Read the handout. Answer all questions in full sentences (skip #7). Complete the reverse side, How Did The Caste System Organize Hindu Society? Try not to use your notes for help. Use your notes only if you absolutely need to. When we go over it, read the entire quote and then state your answer and reason.

Summary If you were born an untouchable, would you accept the caste system? Explain what your reaction to the Caste System would be (if you were an untouchable). Why do many untouchables accept the caste system as a way of life?
