The Dutch colony that became New York New Netherlands The Dutch colony that became New York

New Netherlands—the Dutch colony Influences of the Dutch Holland had plenty of land, there was no urgent need to colonize. Henry Hudson claimed the river valley above Manhattan Island. The Dutch were more permissive than the Puritans—holidays were celebrated with festivals and fun activities. Dutch colonists slowly spread up the Hudson River.

New Netherlands—the Dutch colony Manhattan Island (New York City) was purchased from the Lenape Indians for about $25 worth of European tools (kettles, axes, etc.) by Peter Minuit Native Americans had some idea of property rights, but not in the same sense that the Dutch did.

New Netherlands—the Dutch colony Dutch families received generous land grants, but many single men came for quick money in the fur trade business. Patroon System: Individuals were given large tracts of land, and were required to bring in 50 people (over age 15). In return, that landowner had complete authority over that little town. Only two of these were successful.

New Netherlands—the Dutch colony Advantages: Increased population Established a larger colony Landowner had power Little risk for Dutch East India Company Disadvantages: People brought over had to work the land and share their crops. These colonists had to pay rent, did not own any land. Not a successful system.

New Netherlands—the Dutch colony Peter Stuyvesant Authoritarian director general of New Amsterdam. Outlawed alcohol, prohibited Jewish, Lutheran and Quaker houses of worship. Had to be told by his superiors to modify his rules and be nicer. 1664—British come to take over, no one in New Amsterdam listened to his orders to fight back.

New York Sept. 8, 1664—English navy sails to New Netherlands to fight for the colony. The Dutch hate Stuyvesant so much that they refuse to fight back and surrender immediately. Under English rule, life remains pretty much the same. Named for James, Duke of York.

New York—The Diverse Colony Why was New York such a diverse colony? The Dutch welcomed people form all countries. Many religions started in the colony You were not forced to believe one religion or be punished New York was centered on trade, and many nations came to its harbor.

Your Task: Create a poster On the piece of white copy paper provided to you, create a poster encouraging colonists to come to either New Netherlands or New York. You can choose from the following points of view: A Patroon An official in the Dutch West India Trading Company An English citizen in New York after 1664 Who are you trying to attract? What would make them want to come here? Make it look desirable!
