Waves Transferring Energy. Waves: traveling disturbance that carries energy from one place to another Waves travel through water, but they do not carry.
Energy in Waves. A Wave is… Any disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space. Energy in Waves.
WAVES AS 2.3: Demonstrate an understanding of wave phenomenon.
What is a Wave? Sound and Light are forms of energy that travel in waves A wave is a repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter.
 Waves  What are they?  How is energy transferred?  Medium  Describe  Mechanical Wave  Describe  Two types  Transverse Wave  Describe  Parts.
Chapter 11 Waves.
What are Waves? SWBAT e xplain the difference between waves, energy, and matter; describe the difference between transverse waves and compressional waves.
 A mechanical wave is a rhythmic disturbance that carries energy through matter and space.  All mechanical waves are made by something that vibrates.
Properties of Waves 8.1. Mechanical Waves Require a medium to transfer energy from one place to another.
1 Vibration: A repeated back-and-forth or up-and-down motion. Energy: The ability to do work.
WAVES Wave motion allows a transfer of energy without a transfer of matter.
Wave Properties Students will be able to Explain wave structure Contrast transverse and longitudinal waves Describe properties of a wave.
Waves and Periodic Motion What are Waves?
Characteristics of Waves
Energy  an object is said to have “energy” if the object has the ability to change its environment Two ways to transfer energy  1. through the application.
WAVES Regular, Rhythmic disturbance in a field or medium where a transfer of energy occurs.
Waves and Sound. What are Waves? Describe a Wave: Think about an ocean wave Think about an ocean wave –Now describe it.
Year 1 Science 6.P.1.1. What are waves? “Moving energy” Formed when a force causes vibrations through space or matter Vibrations form wavelike disturbances.
Waves and Wave Properties. A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from place to place. A wave does NOT carry matter with it! It just moves the matter.
What is a wave? Waves are rhythmic disturbances that carry energy through matter or space A medium is the material through which a wave travels.
What is sound?* Sound begins with a vibration. Sounds travel in waves through a medium.

Waves. Definitions Wave: a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium. The matter does not experience net movement, but vibrates about some rest.

Introduction to Waves. A wave is actually just a carrier of energy. Just like a Fireman in a bucket brigade. The fireman does not move, but the buckets.

Presentation transcript:

A vibration or disturbance that transfers energy. WAVES A vibration or disturbance that transfers energy.

Types of Waves Transverse  Also known as Electromagnetic. The energy travels at right angles to the motion of the wave. Travels through a vacuum. Light is an example. Longitudinal  Also known as Compressional waves. The energy travels in the same direction as the motion of the wave. Must have a medium to travel through. Sound is an example.

Parts of Waves Electromagnetic: Longitudinal:

Speed of a wave Velocity = Frequency times wavelength v = ƒ λ Problem: How fast is a wave traveling that has a 245 Hertz frequency and a wavelength of 1.4m?
