Presentation transcript:

Demonstration Speeches “A demonstration speech would be appropriate if you were going to speak on topics such as making sushi, repairing a lamp, cutting hair, showing how a vacuum cleaner works, or binding a book.” -Fujishin on page 136

Demonstration Speeches Provides answers to the question “How do you do that?” (Showing a skill set) Think ‘VERB/NOUN’ (baking cookies, shooting basketball, cleaning gun, avoiding tickets, etc…)

Attention Getter must be solid! Even though you are showing the audience how to do something, you still need an enticing attention getter to start off on the right foot! Don’t say: “I’m making pancakes!” = Dull, lifeless. And you’ll start @ a C or D grade. Instead, say: “Every Christmas morning, my mom would make these amazing pancakes made from Bactrian camel; ooh, the smell…. Here’s how to enjoy this exotic dish…”

Preparing a Demonstration Speech: Things to consider as you put together your presentation = Required steps or stages What comes first? What’s absolutely essential? Which step is easiest? Which step is hardest? What does the audience already know how to do? Where will the audience be most likely to get confused? Which step takes the most time? Which take very little time?

Organizing a Demonstration Speech Organize steps in order. Clarify and simplify difficult steps. Think about the physical space of the room. Don’t forget to put stage directions on your index cards or outline.

Audience Participation As a rule – NONE (You are not going to show us how to make an origami crane, & have all 35 audience members do it along with you) NO RANDOM AUDIENCE MEMBERS BROUGHT UP – sorry, they tend to steal your thunder & your grade goes down. HAVE AN ASSISTANT – Many students’ grades are butchered with mixing/cutting/pouring activities. Get someone to help you in advance!

Don’t Assume You Know Just because you are demonstrating something you know how to do…doesn’t mean you can automatically explain it to an audience. VERY EASY to tell who is doing this speech for the first time (happens far too much here – I encourage you to practice a few times; it’ll help!)

Visual Aids What actual objects will you need. What gaps will you need to fill in. Practice working with your props.

SPEAKER RULES FOR FOOD You DO NOT need to have enough for everyone. It does, however, help your Audience Interest/Overall Effectiveness grade… You and ONE OTHER PERSON ONLY may stay behind to clean if speaking at end of hall. YOU MUST BRING EVERYTHING – I provide only two tables and power.

AUDIENCE RULES FOR DEMOS DO NOT talk to speakers during speeches. The speaker WILL address you, only leading to a lower grade for you both. Ask questions AFTER everyone claps & I’m grading. If the speaker brought treats, great. However, form an organized line to get any handouts AND due to elementary-school transgressions, students can no longer go get drinks claiming “the speaker forced me to eat & now I’m thirsty! Not my fault!” Bring your own drink those days.

Condensing Time Prepare several different versions of the items at different points in the process: I.E. = For a piñata: Show us the wet glue & papering process for your speech, have a balloon with the dried strips already made, and lastly have a finished piñata w/ the balloon popped/decorated/filled. We don’t have time to watch stuff dry…

Memory Canon is Key Rehearsal is one of the keys to delivering an effective demonstration speech. Again, those who do it for the first time generally get lesser grades than those who practiced.

Demonstration Speeches Make sure you choose a topic that is narrow enough that you can actually demonstrate it in 4-6 minutes. Recently, I’ve had a makeup application & fundamentals of boxing speech each go OVER 13 minutes. TOO LONG. Your grade will go down, guaranteed. You MUST parse your speech…
