-Discuss FRQ Pain, Taste & Smell ( touch) -Volunteers for hand The Other Senses -Discuss FRQ Pain, Taste & Smell ( touch) -Volunteers for hand

Pain Gate Control Theory= The spinal cord contains a neurological “gate" that either blocks pains/allows signals to pass to brain. Tissue injury- opens “gate” = pain Large neural fibers= closes “gate” ( massage stubbed toe/ ice on injury) Pain Perception demo

Taste What are the four basic tastes? Sweet, salty, sour, bitter Taste is innate ( newborn) No tongue- still taste Sensory Interaction=one sense influences another ( smell-taste) Demo-Can it really be that sweet?

Smell

Psychology of Smell Pheromones= chemical messengers that produce endocrine response or elicit a response pattern Gender Odor Demo Are there human pheromones? Research study on Ovulation & Menstruation ( McKlintoch & Stern)

Do smells enhance attraction? Attraction and T-Shirt smell- Immune System Genital blood flow Increased: Good & plenty w/cucumber 14 % Baby Powder 13% Lavender & Pumpkin Pie 11%

Touch Sensation What are the basic skin sensations? Pressure, Warmth, Cold , Pain How is touch psychologically significant? Attachment & Social Functioning, Pain reduction, Reproduction Story of touch development

Demos Two- Point Thresholds = measure of difference between two stimuli before they are felt as two separate stimuli. Demos: Toothpicks
