What is Bullying? It is repeated aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength. Physical Bullying (hitting, kicking) Verbal Bullying (name-calling) Emotional Bullying (exclusion) Cyber-Bullying

Why is this a problem? Being bullied and harassed can lead to: Interference with learning (low grades) Poor social interaction Fear of going school/Frequent Illness Low self-esteem/Depression

Why is this a problem? (continued) Being a bully can lead to: Frequent fights Antisocial behavior Be truant from school Drop out from school Engage in violent acts Substance Abuse

Why do some children bully/harass? They are/have been bullied/harassed Popularity amongst peers Media influences Need for power and influence Easily-frustrated Impulsive

Myths about Bullying/Harassment Bullies have low self-esteem. Bullies are often socially isolated. Boys are bullies and girls are not. Bullying/Harassment does not happen at a private school.

The Bystander Is one or more students who stand on the sidelines and witness the acts of bullying/harassment. They either participate or watch and do nothing. Is the bystander also responsible for bullying/harassing someone?

Why Are Some People Bullied? No Particular Reason Because They Are Different They May Look Like They Won’t Stand Up for Themselves (Not physical)

Why Is Bullying Harmful? Makes People Feel Lonely Unhappy Frightened Makes People Feel Unsafe Makes People Feel Something Is Wrong With Them May Lose Confidence In Themselves

What Can You Do? Talk to Teacher Talk to Parents Talk to Brother/Sister Talk to Friends Try to Deal With It Yourself (But Be Careful!)

If You Try To Deal With It: Assertive Speaking Model Describe Behavior Be Honest With Your Feelings Because . . . Make a Specific Request

You Can Do It! NO MORE BULLIES AT OUR SCHOOL!
