7 years and 10,000 deaths a month… The conflict in Darfur has raged for over 7 years causing as much casualties as destruction of property in Sudan. This conflict has etched the future for Sudan as it caused new social and geographical implications. What occurred in Darfur is comparable to what occurred ten years before in Rwanda.

Why exactly did the Darfur Conflict happen? Exploitation of natural resources of the non-Arab sedentary Africans in Darfur: Darfur’s agricultural and oil Many Arab government leaders wanted to take advantage and exploit the resources of the Darfur population

Ecological and Economic Marginalization Local communities coping with drought and famine Ethnic Division

The People of Darfur Guerilla warfare leads Estimated 1.9 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) Increases in Arab and other African tribes in Darfur

South Sudan’s Resilience Humanitarian effort South Sudan became the 193rd member of the UN. Trouble still follows the new nation

Darfur vs. Rwanda Both fought using militia and rebel groups. Both between two ethnic groups. Both caused deaths. Both seen as international Atrocities. Completely different.

The Differences: Darfur Rwanda Lasted over 5 years from 2003 Non-Arab vs. Arab Land, displacement Most of deaths caused by starvation and diseases. DOHA peace coalition, still people are displaced. Guerilla war Approximately 100 days in 1994 Hutu vs. Tutsi Political power, Ethnic division Murder was the main cause of death. Tutsi tribe created coalition government Genocide

Conclusion… Darfur: two ethnic groups fighting over ownership of land and natural resources like oil. Darfur conflicts end with peace talks, independence and UN membership. The conflict in Darfur was quickly associated to Rwanda, these two examples are similar but at the same time very different.
