Challenge Students' Minds San Gorgonio Outdoor Science School's philosophy is to teach science concepts and social skills that are suited to an outdoor setting. The science curriculum is aligned with California State Science Standards for fifth and sixth grades, correlates with Next Generation Science Standards, and supports STEM principles. The program also builds 21st Century skills: 5 Cs *Critical thinking (problem-solving) *Creativity (innovation) *Communication *Collaboration *Character

Through trails and activities, SGOSS will cover: Astronomy - stars and planets, distance in space (light years), deep sky objects and constellations. Ecology - ecosystems, energy flow, photosynthesis, food chains, food pyramids, living vs. non-living, cycles, relationships, soil formation and local plant identification. Geology - plate tectonics, earthquakes and fault lines in California, rock cycle, weathering, erosion, and identification of local rocks and minerals. Wildlife Biology - observation and identification of local wildlife, characteristics and adaptations, habitat requirements, roles in the ecosystem: predator vs. prey, and insect investigation. Science Process Skills - observing, categorizing, comparing, and the scientific method, (forming a hypothesis, testing, analyzing, and forming conclusions).

Staff The Outdoor Science School staff are trained educators with degrees in science and years of experience teaching children in the outdoors. They are also trained in safety, first aid, and emergency response. A registered nurse is on site. Children are supervised at all times during their stay. Every possible effort has been made to provide children with quality education, nutritious meals, safe activities, and adequate rest.

Accommodations Students stay in heated cabins with bunk beds. Bathrooms have individual shower stalls for privacy. Students clean their living quarters daily. Boys and girls stay in separate cabins. A Cabin Leader stays in the cabin with the students.

Homesickness Most students who become homesick overcome it within 24 hours and have a successful week. If your child becomes homesick, the staff will encourage him/her to work through it. If he/she continues to have trouble adjusting, you will be contacted.
