Outline Description of coupled data assimilation system Performance of system Impact on forecasts Summary/future Outline for the talk: - Briefly introduce the Bureau’s dynamical seasonal prediction system, POAMA; - Will go over the data assimilation and ensemble generation strategies currently used in POAMA; - Describe the new coupled ensemble generation strategy we are developing, and how these steps are leading us towards coupled data assimilation; and, - Show some results of our investigation into the coupled covariances to be used in the proposed coupled data assimilation system. PECDAS: POAMA Ensemble Coupled Data Assim System Version 1: Weakly coupled Atmos: ALI (Daily Nudge to existing analyses) Ocean:Ensemble OI (Oke et al 2005) but with the flow dependent Covariances from ensemble perturbations (3D multi-variate) ASSIM FULL COUPLED MODEL Observations Atmos & Ocean Compress Ensemble Nudge to central analysis Based on CEI scheme the coupled data assimilation system has been developed. - The system would run a coupled model ensemble, as done in the CEI scheme. - Then instead of CEI scheme nudging to reanalyses, in the coupled assimilation system data would be assimilated into central ensemble member using similar algorithms to PEODAS (using observations for ocean and reanalysis/NWP for atmosphere).

Preliminary version: PECDAS Atmosphere: ALI nudging towards ERA-Interim Ocean: PEODAS scheme (ensemble multivariate OI) Perturbation generation: 30 mem coupled breeding method rather than EnKF Assim: every 1 day with 1 day time window Obs: EN3 Temp. & Sali. profiles, including CTD, XBT, Argo Model: POAMA-2, T47L17 BAM and ACOM2 (MOM2) Observation errors: uncorrelated in space Covariance Localization: horizontally & vertically Keep error ratio being constant: (model) / (obs)= 0.47 30 years reanalysis done (1980-2010)

PEODAS: POAMA Ensemble Ocean Data Assim System Atmos: ALI (Nudge to existing analyses) Ocean:Ensemble OI (Oke et al 2005) but with the flow dependent Covariances from ensemble perturbations (3D multi-variate) ASSIM FULL COUPLED MODEL Observations Atmos & Ocean Compress Ensemble Nudge to central analysis based on surface wind spread Compress ensemble – nudge to central analysis by constant factor Ocean Model – perturbed forcing Yin et al 2011 Coupled Breeding method – just like the coupled assimilation is used to generate perturbations for the atmosphere (and new ones for ocean) for the coupled forecasts – centred on the ocean only and ALI analyses (does not impact ocean assimilation) Based on CEI scheme the coupled data assimilation system has been developed. Atmos: 6hrly nudge (weaker) done offline with observed SST

Summary PECDAS – weakly coupled assimilation, with implicit bred ensemble PEODAS – ocean only assimilation + separate Atmos nudging, separate coupled bred ensemble Outline for the talk: - Briefly introduce the Bureau’s dynamical seasonal prediction system, POAMA; - Will go over the data assimilation and ensemble generation strategies currently used in POAMA; - Describe the new coupled ensemble generation strategy we are developing, and how these steps are leading us towards coupled data assimilation; and, - Show some results of our investigation into the coupled covariances to be used in the proposed coupled data assimilation system. Ensemble Spread: SST and Temperature (averaged over 1980-2006) surface equator PEODAS PECDAS

Ensemble Spread: Salinity surface equator PEODAS PECDAS

Temperature Reanalyses-WOA2001 Vertical velocity PECDAS_no_oass But keep atmos nudging PECDAS The bias of flat thermocline in the free model run are significantly reduced for both PECDAS and PEODAS. Vertical velocities indicate the PECDAS is less dynamical balanced in the eastern Pacific Ocean than the free model run but generally comparable with the PEODAS. PEODAS

T300 correlations between EN3 and the reanalyses (1989.01-2008.12) PEODAS PECDAS PECDAS _no_oass Quite similar with each other.

Profiles of RMSD (top) between zonal currents from TAO ADCP and from PECDAS (black), PEODAS (red), and PECDAS_no_oass (blue) RMSD There are big errors in the zonal currents from PECDAS in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific Ocean.

Impact on Skill JAN and JUL 01 starts 1989-2008 30 member ensemble for each start date Each system uses their own ensemble members PECDAS – weakly coupled assimilation, with implicit bred ensemble PEODAS – ocean only assimilation + separate coupled bred ensemble

SSTA forecast skill POAMA-2 (PECDAS) POAMA-2 (PEODAS) persistent Nino 3 IOD-west Nino 4 IOD-east Due to the problem of PECDAS the unbalanced initial conditions degrade the skills. As a results there are no obvious improvements for m25a comparing with the m24a in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.

500 hPa geop_height Southern Extra-tropics Red – PEODAS Blue – PECDAS Dash – spread Solid – rms error Obs = NCEP2

Summary PECDAS weakly coupled assimilation at least as good as uncoupled Coupled bred vectors implicit Current issues – due to atmosphere model bias when atmos constrained – general or just this model ? Coupled assimilation not solution to shock due to model error (but will reduce shock from inconsistent initialisation) Impact on forecasts small but positive (but untunned?)

Future Implement with latest model: Short term: N96L38 UKMO Atmospheric Model + MOM Next year: N216 UKMO Atmospheric Model + 0.25 degree Ocean Further development: Compression technique – e.g. clipping versus nudging Zonal mean/2D/3D Is surface wind best norm Full EnKF Fully coupled assimilation
