Scenario 1: One of your mid career faculty comes to your chair and asks for a significant package to support her desire to begin a research career and retain her. What does your chair do? Not commit to anything and call you to discuss. Respond quickly agreeing to everything and let you know afterwards. A blend, committing to some things at the outset but discuss with you when the money is significant.

Scenario 2 Your chair wants to start a new program and is proposing that the hospital fund the endeavor. You are not sure you agree with your chair that this is appropriate to request of the hospital. What do you do? Meet with the hospital COO prior to the request to talk through what is coming and your thoughts. Talk to your chair again and try and get him to see it your way. Bite your tongue and prepare the proformas for your chair to take to a meeting with the COO.

Scenario 3: You are getting ready for your Departments budget review with the institution. After reviewing and finalizing the presentation with your chair you find an error and change the slides. Your tell your chair of the error as your are walking into the meeting. How does your chair respond? Hope your resume is current because you are not a reliable Administrator. Glad you caught it, why don’t you take point on this since you have a better understanding.

Scenario 4: A senior faculty member is your department had made critical remarks about your chair. You believe there is merit to the complaints. How do you respond? You tell the chair and name the faculty member. (Because most faculty members tell you things because they know it will get back to the chair…) Since you agree with the criticism you provide the feedback and own it. You tell the chair that “some people are saying…” but you don’t say if you agree.

Scenario 5: You are the administrator of surgery when the chair position is turning over. The department has had some financial difficulties and the new chair will be given the imperative to get the department into the black. You are meeting with 8 second round candidates and are asked what you believe should be the first changes. What do you say? Negotiate for more hospital support. You name five surgeons who should be fired. You say that department administration is bloated.
