Some people are different. 27-Nov-18 Some people are different. Get over it! Starter What do you think is taking place here? Ask students to consider what this picture is showing- discuss in pairs Hopefully they’ll be able to identify that the people holding hands are Muslim The star of David in the window identifies the building as being a synagogue as does the writing above the door 2

Information http://www.wsj.com/articles/norway-muslims-encircle-synagogue-to-support-jews-1424549778 Are students surprised by this? Explain what anti-Semitism is and that it’s on the rise in the UK too

For discussion: Activity Have you seen examples of individuals or groups trying to create tension between people of different faiths? Are you concerned about the way any particular religious community is treated? If so which ones and why? What could we do to help build better relations between people of different faiths? Activity Students should discuss each of these in pairs for a few minutes and then get feedback about each question

A local Synagogue then invited the community to worship there. The article on the right describes how a Muslim community centre in London was firebombed by Islamophobes. A local Synagogue then invited the community to worship there. This, like with the previous example shows people of different faiths standing together to defeat prejudice and hate. Information http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/jun/11/british-muslim-communities-better-protect-themselves Click on the article for hyperlink to the full article

We can stand together to say we disagree with hate! In Tower Hamlets community and faith leaders oppose prejudice and intolerance. They support religious freedom. Demonstrate Picture one shows a multi-faith march in Tower Hamlets. These events show that people in the borough are willing to stand up against religious intolerance The English Disco Lovers mock the EDL and now have more ‘likes’ on Facebook. We can show that hateful views are silly and should be mocked

Plenary Think about what you can do to promote diversity and cooperation between different groups of people.
