I am the one who has a laugh for every occasion, The one who prompts, “Tell them about the time when…”  

I am the one who forgets birthdays,

The one who cleans up after the dog… …but can’t stay mad for long.

I am from Houston heat and South Dakota breeze,

From Tennessee women who know all the trees and flowers…

…and shades of Porter Paints,

From Kentucky men who love animals, children, and TV.

I am the one who shops only the clearance racks,

The one who knows all the lyrics and follows almost all the rules,

The one who can’t read a map…

…But believes that wrong turns can lead to the most exciting discoveries.

I am the one who can’t wait to get in the water,

The one who makes friends slowly…

…but keeps them forever,

The one who has been carried off the hockey field high in the air

And has conquered the buses of Mexico.

 I am the one who prays silently with eyes squeezed tight in concentration,

The one who saved all the ticket stubs from my dates with Jon.

I am the one who sings our daughter to sleep…

I am the one who slips out quietly to avoid saying goodbye.
