Program Summaries FACULTY LED: ACES Faculty-Led Program: A Focus on the Mediterranean Lifestyle in Greece Students would spend time learning about the Mediterranean diet pre-departure, then travel to Greece with guided experiential learning for 13 days at the end of May. This course provides an opportunity for students to gain an appreciation for different lifestyle choices and the impact those choices have on health. Facilitated discussions focusing on the scientific method, epidemiology research, and lifestyle contributors to the prevention or development of chronic diseases will occur throughout the course. ACES/ENG Faculty-Led: Summer Research and Cultural Immersion Program in China This 6 week summer program at Zhejiang University in China is especially attractive for Food Science students. The program consists of Chinese language, research/independent study, and weekly field trips with industry visits. University of Illinois FSHN faculty Hong Chen will be attending the program. SUMMER: ACES Exchange: Study and Intern at El Purpan in France This program in the south of France involves 1 month of courses studying French language as well as viticulture and enology. The second month of the program, students participate in an internship on a French vineyard, dairy or other agricultural site while living with a host family. There is also a semester program at Purpan with a French language requirement. IAGE Illinois in Italy: Rome - Study and Intern on Food The Illinois Center in Rome program offerings focus on the critical study of culture, systems and politics of food in Italy. The summer program will consist of 4 weeks of coursework in Rome, followed by an optional 4-week internship in locations throughout Italy depending on the internship placement ACES Exchange: Food Heritage Tour at UniLaSalle in France This summer course compares agricultural systems in France, Italy and the Netherlands and addresses topics such as innovative initiatives in food production and processing, food quality labels, and landscape research. Through lectures, workshops and field visits, students will gain insights into regional cultural landscapes and discover what makes European food production unique. SEMESTER: IAGE Illinois in Italy: Rome – Food and Culture (Spring) The Food and Culture in Rome program focuses on the critical study of culture, systems and politics of food in Italy. The program is offered during the summer or semester-long. Each term will have unique elements. Fall semester focuses on food marketing and business, while the spring semester program offers courses in food and media. There is also a shorter, summer program. ACES Direct Enroll: Global Health & Nutrition at Njala University in Sierra Leone The Global Health, Nutrition, Water and Sanitation Program is the opportunity of a lifetime for students to learn about global health while experiencing and living in a rich West African culture.. Through coursework, field excursions, and an internship, this program puts you in direct contact with the social and economic realities of communities working to improve public health in Sierra Leone.
