How ICT is used by individuals and businesses Input Devices.

Today Learning Objectives To understand how and why different input devices are used. Learning Outcomes Successfully completing the Edmodo Quiz Learning Expectations A focused and productive classroom!

Definition In computing, an input device is any peripheral used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer Anything that gives information to a computer

Keyboard We all know what Keyboards are? Sets of keys with characters (letters, numbers, punctuation and symbols) that can be used to enter commands onto a computer. What task would you do that would require a keyboard?

Specialist Keyboards A specialist keyboard have key labelled with characters set out in a different patter to suit the user. Designed for disabled users. E.g. Braille keyboards for the visual impaired Engineering Keyboards for specialised character entry.

Mouse Pretty Straight Forward Moves a pointer on a screen One or more buttons that are clicked to chose items from an on-screen menu and select items by clicking on them.

Microphone Converts sound to electrical signs which is digitised Used on mobile calls, video conferences or xbox live

Keypad A keypad has fewer keys than an ordinary keyboard, often only numbers, and can be used when entering the price or a cost of an item. What would the benefits of these be? Where do we have these in school?

Touch Pad A touchpad is a touch sensitive panel that responds to fingers. It can be used instead of a mouse to move a pointer on screen or by taping which can act as a mouse click does. Where do we typically see these?

Remote Control. Remotes send input instructions to computer systems or equipment wirelessly

Scanner Scanners use reflected light from documents or photographs to capture a digital version of a document or image which can then be used in software applications.

Barcode Scanner These scan the lines or matrix o a barcode and convert them for input into a computer system. The captured barcode can be used to look up the details of an item in the database. Where do we typically see these? Why?

Chip and PIN Reader The chip in the card is read in a slot and there is a keypad for entering the PIN. A Magnetics stripe reader is used if the chip cannot be read (or if there is no chip) Card details are read from he card and checked using the PIN entered by the purchaser when using a credit or debit card.

Magnetic Stripe Reader This reads the data from a magnetic stripe on he card when it is swiped. Does as a backup if there is no chip in a card.

MIDI MIDI is a special interface for connecting musical instruments to commuter systems and for storing and transmitting musical data.

Sensors Sensors convert physical variables such as temperature, pressure or light into electrical signals. They can be used for measuring the temperate or level lights and then output to an air-condition unit. Where have these been used in the school

Camera Cameras use light sensitive receptors to convert light into electrical signals that are digitised and stored as still or moving images. They are used for taking photographs, capturing video or for video surveillance in CCTV.

Final Task Compete this weeks Edmodo Quiz.
