Matter and its Properties Chapter 1: Section 1.2 Dr. C.’s Pre-AP Chemistry Lake Dallas High School Fall 2015

Today’s Objectives (September 3rd (A-Day) September 4th (B-Day) Define: Volume, Mass, Atom, Element, and Compound Define and Identify: Physical vs Chemical Change Identify Extensive and Intensive properties Compare the structure of solids, liquids, and gases Classify matter as a mixture or a pure substance

What is Volume? Volume is the amount of three dimensional space an object occupies

Mass is the amount of matter present What is Mass? Mass is the amount of matter present

Atoms, Elements, Compounds Atom is the smallest building block of an element. It maintains the chemical identify of that element. An Element is made of one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances A Compound is made from atoms of 2 or more elements and can be broken down into simpler substances.

Yay Legos!

Tylenol is a Compound

Extensive vs. Intensive Properties Extensive Properties depend on the amount of matter present. Volume Mass Amount of energy in a substance

Extensive vs. Intensive Properties Intensive Properties do not depend on the amount of matter present. Density Melting Point Boiling Point Ability to conduct electricity

Physical Properties and Changes A Physical Property can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Boiling Point or Melting Point A Physical Change is a change of a substance that does not change the identity of the substance. Grinding, Cutting, Melting and Boiling

Physical Change

A can is still a can Yay a demo!

A Change of State is a physical change from one state to another.

Solids, Liquids and Gases Solids – Definite Shape and Definite Volume Liquids – Indefinite Shape and Definite Volume Gas – Indefinite Shape and Indefinite Volume But what the heck is a plasma?

Plasma

Chemical Property and Change A Chemical Property is the ability of a substance to undergo changes that transform it into a different substance. This change is called a chemical change or more commonly a chemical reaction.

A Chemical Reaction Takes Place w00t another demo!

Reactants And Products In chemistry chemical reactions are written in the form: Reactants  Products Reactants are the substances that change Products are the substances that are formed

Evidence of a Chemical Reaction

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can be released or absorbed, it is never created or destroyed. Heat Light

Mixtures Vs. Pure Substances Mixtures are a blend of two or more kinds of matter that retain their individual properties. Often mixed together physically Can usually be separated Pure Substances have a fixed composition Each Sample always has the same properties Water is always H2O but Sand, Pepper, Salt mixture can differ in each beaker.

Classification of Matter Visibly Distinguishable Parts?

Do we have time for a game? Let’s check the clock!
