The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano
Ch 1 Evelyn is getting ready for her first day at the Five and Dime, but Mami continues to "nag" her about eating food before work and Pops is introduced into the story as a person who hates hippies. He also informs Evelyn that she will need to help more around the house since she isn't working at the bodega. At the end, she leaves for work hastily.
Ch 2 On her way to work, Evelyn describes the awful smell of her town El Barrio and soon Angel is introduced.(A childhood friend and son of Senor Santiago, a puragua vendor) When Evelyn arrives, her boss Mr. Simpson sets her behind the make-up counter and introduced to Lydia, an old worker. Afterwards three girls,(Migdalia, Dora, and Awilda) walk in and sit down, as well as try for a cheap banana split, not knowing its rigged. After a while, a black woman named Dolores is introduced and she gets along well with Evelyn. On her way home, Evelyn gets a paragua, and soon after Sr. Santiago is taken off the street for not having a vendor's license.
Ch 3 Evelyn's grandmother Abuela appears and causes a ruckus with her arrival. She is acknowledged mentally as the lady with no/fake eyebrows. After introducing Abuela with annoyance, Mami leaves for the store where Porifirio is waiting for her. Evelyn is later annoyed by Abuela and makes a mental comment of this being the longest day ever.
Ch 4 Abuela takes over Evelyn's room and she sleeps on the couch. The next morning is chaotic with Abuela taking up the bathroom, Pops hitting his face and his nose bleeding and Evelyn having to pee and get ready for work. She then leaves for work, and since it’s a mildly slow day, Evelyn is stationed at the hardware counter to learn to make keys, and then Abuela walks in the store. She recognizes Evelyn and talks to her as everyone struggles not to laugh.
Ch 5 Evelyn is taught how to make keys by Mr. Simpson and soon Wilfredo shows up to get a duplicate of a suspicious key with "Do not duplicate" printed on it. When Evelyn goes to ask Mr. Simpson about it to be sure, Wilfredo gets upset and he leaves.
Ch 6 Abuela and Mami are squabbling again over petty problems. Evelyn goes back to her room and sees a photo album of Abuela's. In the album she sees Valentine's cards, a 1965 Christmas card from Mami, which Evelyn is surprised that Abuela kept, old pictures of Abuela and a baby picture of someone. However, pictures in the back alarm Evelyn as they are two policemen shooting at something, and a shocking picture of policemen shooting at a terrified crowd. Abuela was mysterious.
