The Reading Process Pre-Reading Reading Post-Reading

Journal Entry #3: The Theme of Family What is the Family? One of the most important themes in Enrique’s Journey is the definition of the family. Before we discuss the book, I want you to think about how you define a family. Who do you consider your family and why? There are many potential answers: the biological family, families formed through marriage, friends, etc. What is your personal definition? Is a family important to an individual’s success? Why or Why not?

True or False Children who have been abandoned by their parents should just make their families with those they can and let go of any ties or bonds to their mothers and fathers.

True or False While it is not the ideal situation, a parent who regularly sends financial support to a child, but is not physically with him/her, can still be a good parent.

True or False If a parent is living in extreme poverty, he/she must do everything possible to provide financially for his/her child even if that means leaving the child with relatives indefinitely.
