(9 marks) This question needs you to show off your knowledge of attitudes to migrants (both during WWII and then in the 1950s). Instead of just comparing what they say, you need to use your knowledge of the period to explain WHY they have such different views – in particular you should also explain how and why their purpose is differing. You could merge both paragraphs and get full marks. One reason they disagree is because of the time they were written… One reason they differ is because they were produced at different times. HINTS – Source A is from the 1940s/WWII when Britain needed the help of the colonies/Empire troops. The Government needed to encourage people to accept foreign troops. It predates mass-migration Source B is from the 1950s and follows a period of mass migration after the war. This led to concerns over the numbers of migrants. The post war labour shortage was no longer an issue and by 1958 violence began to erupt.

Use details of the source and your knowledge to explain your answe This question needs you to make a judgment on how useful the source is as evidence. Instead of just relating what the source says, you need to use your knowledge of the period to explain WHY it is useful. The source is useful as evidence because… In the source we can see… This suggests… At the time… Therefore, this source is useful because… Make a clear statement of the usefulness of the source that is based on linking what the source shows with specific and detailed knowledge on immigration. Perfect answers will consider why it was necessary for this source to be made in the first place. Can this tell us anything about immigrants in Britain? DO NOT simply say it is not useful because it only shows one person, or because it’s ‘biased’. That is too simple and makes little sense. HINTS – Why do you think there needed to be a publicity opportunity showing an immigrant working happily on a bus? What do you know about the experiences of immigrants in Britain that can be linked to what the source is showing (i.e. an immigrant at work)?

This question needs you to show off your knowledge of Enoch Powell and how attitudes, both positive and negative, were formed). Instead of just comparing what they say, you need to use your knowledge of the period to explain WHY they have such different views – in particular you should also explain how and why their purpose is differing. Make a clear statement of purpose (in terms of intended impact) of publishing the photograph in this area at this time (eg It was published to change the dockers’ minds about Powell.) Question 4 – Feed Forward Support Study Source E. What is the cartoonist’s message? Use details of the cartoon and your knowledge to explain your answer. This question needs you to show off your knowledge of employment for immigrants in Britain and the impact of legislation which was intended to stop racial discrimination. Examples from both the source and your own knowledge is required, with both supporting a clear assessment of the message of the cartoon. Question 5 – Feed Forward Support ‘Between 1939 and 1975, immigrants made a valuable contribution to Britain.’ How far do you agree with this interpretation? Use your knowledge of British society 1939–1975 and the sources to explain your answer. (16 marks +3 spag) This question needs to be a ‘balanced’ or 2 sided answer. It must be supported by BOTH examples from your own knowledge and the sources provided (at least 2 source examples and 2 OK examples in each paragraph). You must also reach a conclusion – MOST answers lacked precise examples from OK which limited marks to 8/16 (sources only) or 12/16 (limited OK). On the one hand… I would partly agree with this statement because I know that immigrants did make a positive impact. Negative - You could have identified negative issues and linked it to examples like Notting Hill Race Rots.
