Male Reproductive Anatomy To follow along: fill in the blanks on your worksheet (front and back). Take notes on the purpose or function of each part.
Side view of the male reproductive system. External parts (outside the body) penis (#4) and scrotum (#7). All other parts are inside the body. This presentation is entirely on the side view portion. You will fill in the front view at the end.
External parts: penis and scrotum. Purpose of scrotum: to hold the testicles (“testes”) at the proper temperature: 98.6 degrees. Will move toward or away from the body to manage the temperature. Penis Scrotum
Testicles (“testes”) Males have two. Produce sperm, the male sex cell Produce testosterone, the male sex hormone. Testosterone gives males a deeper voice, broader shoulders, and other characteristics of an adult male. Penis Testicles Scrotum
Epididymis Long tube coiled in the back of the scrotum. Sperm stay here for 2-3 months while they mature. One per testicle Penis Testicles Scrotum epididymis
Vas deferens (plural: vasa deferens) Two, one from each epididymis. Sperm travel through this tube, past his bladder, then out the urethra. Bladder: where urine (“pee”) is stored. Has no part in the reproductive system. bladder Vas deferens Penis Testicles Scrotum epididymis
Urethra Tube that runs through the penis. In the male, it has two jobs: Urination (part of urinary system) Ejaculation (part of reproductive system). On the way out, sperm gather fluids called semen. bladder Vas deferens Penis Urethra Testicles Scrotum epididymis
Seminal vesicles Part 1 of 3 in semen production. Contribute sugars to help nourish sperm on their long journey. bladder Seminal vesicles Vas deferens Penis Urethra Testicles Scrotum epididymis
Prostate gland Part 2 of 3 in semen production. Contribute lubricating liquid, allowing sperm to swim freely. bladder Seminal vesicles Vas deferens Penis Prostate gland Urethra Testicles Scrotum epididymis
Cowper’s gland Part 3 of 3 in semen production. Neutralize the acids that might still be in the urethra from the last time the male urinated. bladder Seminal vesicles Vas deferens Penis Prostate gland Cowper’s gland Urethra Testicles Scrotum epididymus
Anus Second opening in a man’s private parts (other is the urethra). Plays no part in reproduction. From where a bowel movement (“poop”) comes out. bladder Seminal vesicles Vas deferens Penis Prostate gland Cowper’s gland Urethra Anus Testicles Scrotum epididymus
Front view Turn your worksheet over. See if you can identify the parts shown before you get the answers. Not all parts from the side view are listed. Which are not shown? When you’re ready, go to the next slide to check your answers.
Front view Not shown/listed: Anus Epididymus Scrotum bladder Seminal vesicles Prostate gland Cowper’s gland Vas deferens Penis Urethra Testicles
For the quiz on Friday You will be given either the front or side view. You will be asked to identify the parts and describe their purpose. There is a Quizlet set available to help. Go to the Quizlet set now and begin practicing. If we have time, we will play Quizlet live.
