FAB Report to the Faculty Senate

PWC Progress January 2012 : Faculty Advisory Board (FAB) created February 2012: CUC established rules concerning FWIS add/drop, grading, etc. May-August 2012 : Director of the Center for Written, Oral, & Visual Communication (Jennifer Shade Wilson) and two associate directors (Elizabeth Festa and Kyung- Hee Bae) hired August 2012 : CWOVC opened to student and faculty appointments September 2012 : search process initiated for PWC Director

FWIS Progress April 2012 : FWIS courses and instructors selected for Fall 2012 May-August 2012 : Three week-long training sessions conducted for FWIS instructors August 2012 : FWIS registration August-November 2012 : Monthly meetings held for FWIS instructors, with additional training September 2012 : Preliminary evaluation of FWIS initiated (diagnostic assignments, survey)

FWIS FAQs How many sections of FWIS are being offered this fall? 42 sections = 630 seats for 550 students. Only one was cancelled due to low enrollment How many of those students got their 1st choice of topic? 431 students (78%) got their 1st choice. How many sections of FWIS will be offered in the spring? 35 sections = 525 seats for 430 students

Who is teaching FWIS courses this fall? Tenured/tenure-track faculty= 15 sections Full-time lecturers = 15 sections Graduate instructors = 4 sections Adjuncts, post-docs, and professors of the practice = 7 sections What is the distribution of FWIS courses offered this year? Fall D-1= 34; D-2= 5; D-3=2 Spring D-1=26; D-2=3; D-3=3 or 4

How did the FWIS registration process go? Smoothly. The interim PWC director met with all divisional advisors prior to the O-Week advising process to explain the FWIS and answer questions. There was excellent cooperation with the program from staff in Academic Advising and the Registrar’s Office. Are transfer students required to take FWIS? Yes, but they may petition for credit on a case-by-case basis directly to the interim faculty director of the PWC.

How many students failed the composition exam this year? 72 received a score of “Not Satisfactory.” Five sections of FWIS 100 are being offered this fall. What is happening to the students who had previously failed the composition exam but hadn’t yet taken COMM 103? 9 sections of COMM 103 are being offered this fall and 2 will be offered in the spring.
