Introduction In this study try to answer two basic questions: – What is the news selection and gatekeeping process in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus media? – How the TRNC media report the conflict news and how much they obey the peace journalism rules?

Topics of Discussion News selection and gatekeeping Peace Journalism

Gatekeeping Theory In 1947 Kurt Lewin first used the Gatekeeping term. David Manning White was first applier of Lewins gatekeeper theory in communication field.

News Selection in TRNC media 1- Most of the editors news criteria is same. Generally, Cyprus problem oriented stories, accident, robbery and crime stories are important for Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus print media editors. 2- Almost all of them are using the Turkish News Agency news bulletin.

News Selection in TRNC media 3- Only KIBRIS newspaper can has a chance to play on newspaper pages. 4- Editors and owners of the newspapers decided to the news selection. 5- Speech is more important than title of the news source.

News Selection in TRNC media TRNC print media news selection is subjective, editors in TRNC print media are selecting the news according to their newspaper publishing policy, and editors are using the Turkish News Agency – Cyprus news bulletin and editors to perpetuate the newspaper owners policies.

Peace Journalism Johan Galtung, first began using the term Peace Journalism in the 1970s. Peace journalism as a broader, fairer and more accurate way of framing stories, drawing on the insights of conflict analysis and transformation (McGoldrick and Lynch [2000]; pp. 10-3). Peace= non-violence + creativity

Peace Journalism in TRNC Media How the TRNC media report conflict news? How much they obey peace journalism rules and ethics?

Peace Journalism in TRNC 1- TRNC news writing journalists try and display the unseen effects of conflict on the society. 2- Journalist should just report the facts or events.

Peace Journalism in TRNC 3- A journalist should take on an active role in trying to bring the people within conflict areas together and maintaining peace 4- Do not to transmit only the peace messages of the elite group. 5- TRNC journalists tend to find out who had metaphorically thrown the first stone.

Peace Journalism in TRNC 76.6 percent of journalists agree with the peace journalism oriented statements. Female journalists, older journalists, experienced journalists, and high- educated journalists are more peace journalism oriented than male journalists, younger journalists, inexperienced journalists, and low-educated journalists.

Weaknesses of Peace Journalism Journalists have different PEACE definition. Ownership status Ideological and historical factors State powers Bad news is good news Financial problem Both conflict sides media have to use
