Priority To meet the initial deadline you must Upload committee approved thesis/dissertation to Digital Commons In order for me to review you must turn in Turnitin Report Manuscript Review form To receive final approval turn in everything else on the Checklist that pertains to you

Uploading Convert final manuscript to PDF Go to the ETD web site and click on “Get Account” www.etsu.edu/gradstud/etd Create an account and log in This is a separate procedure than uploading to D2L for Turnitin scanning * Details to come

Create account an log in. Follow prompts to upload and submit your ETD.

Paperwork Turnitin report Set up by committee Chair Student and Chair examine the results 20MB limit ATS Support Page: https://www.etsu.edu/helpdesk/teaching/turnitin-plagiarism-detection.php Download the Turnitin report in PDF format and e-mail to Emily Redd redd@etsu.edu If Turnitin report is over 20MB, send via ETSU Dropbox https://www.etsu.edu/dropbox Describe MRF – look at form

Paperwork Fill out the Manuscript Review form with your committee and turn it in SP/S grade change question at the top Committee Chair must read and sign All signatures required Gathering signatures – options Sign at defense, department, committee, you Other issues (summer term)- Clear scan accepted, sign on behalf with permission

Continuing the Submission Process Follow the Checklist of Requirements to be sure you turn in all remaining forms and complete all requirements that apply to you

Remaining Paperwork ETSU ETD Release Form Unrestricted Restricted Withheld ProQuest Form After choosing access level from ETSU ETD Release form, follow provided instructions Pages 4 and 5 are required, all others are optional

Other Requirements IRB memo, if applicable (do not include in appendices) Survey of Earned Doctorates, if applicable Pay microfilm fee by the deadline listed in the academic calendar: http://www.etsu.edu/etsu/academicdates.aspx IRB: confidentiality of subjects – don’t give too many details or acknowledgements

Permissions Permissions Must have permission to use exact copies of images that you did not create IMAGES: The visual representation of an idea, data, process etc. Subject to more protection than text. Investigate How and from where you retrieve an image If permission is declared or needs to be granted

The Review Process Cont. Grad School general guidelines Margins: at least 1 inch on all sides Use a standard font and font size throughout Pagination: page numbers (2, 3, 4) centered at the bottom of each page No running headers Table titles go above the table and figure captions go below the figure References – hanging indent or numbered Double check that text/images are at the top margin of every page Look up recently approved theses/dissertations in your discipline as a model

Standard Format Organization of the Manuscript: Title page (no page number) Abstract (page 2) Copyright page (if desired) Dedication page (if desired) Acknowledgments (if desired) Table of Contents List of Tables (if you have more than 5 entries) List of Figures (if you have more than 5 entries) Body of Manuscript Bibliography / References / Works Cited Appendix / Appendices ***NO IRB FORMS*** Vita

Alternate Format Chapter 1 – Introduction including statement of hypotheses Chapter 2 – One journal article for a thesis, or a series of journal articles for a dissertation, presented as separate numbered chapters. These articles should be in the format they would be when published (figures in the body of the text not at the end) and include an abstract and references. Chapter 3 – Dissertations must have a final summary chapter. A thesis advisory committee may request this but it is not required. Table and Figures are to be numbered by chapter (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, etc.)

Departmental Style Guides The Graduate School will check: In-text citation formatting Table and Figure caption formatting Reference formatting You are responsible for: Writing in the style of your discipline Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure Chapter organization and flow Ensuring quoted and paraphrased material is cited Clarity and continuity

Editing For the format review: “Sticky” notes will be made in your PDF file and sent back to you via e-mail Make your corrections in your Word (or other) file, convert back to PDF, and resubmit via the web site You should expect at least two rounds How quickly you get finished depends on when you submit, if your paperwork is all in, and how many corrections are needed

Final Approval Dean Review Deadlines Associate Dean Dr. Scott Kirkby will look over the final manuscript for approval Automated e-mail will be sent once approval has been processed Initial deadline About 4 weeks prior to graduation Final deadline 3 days before graduation Must have approval before the final deadline to graduate
