Math Module 1 Ratios and Unit Rates Topic C: Unit Rates Lesson 21: Getting the Job Done – Speed, Work, and Measurement Units 6.RP.2 6.RP.3b 6.RP.3d PowerPoint designed by Beth Wagenaar Material on which this PowerPoint is based is the Intellectual Property of Engage NY and can be found free of charge at www.engageny.org

Lesson 21 Target I can use rates between measurements to convert measurement in one unit to measurement in another unit. I can manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.

Opening Exercise: 5 minutes Classwork Opening Exercise: 5 minutes Lesson 21

Classwork Example 1: 10 minutes Lesson 21 Conversion tables are really ratio tables that can be used to convert units of length, weight, or capacity (and other units, too). You must multiply the given number by the ratio that compares the two units.

Classwork Example 1: 10 minutes Lesson 21 Work with your partner to find out how many feet are in 48 inches. Make a ratio table that compares feet and inches. Use the conversion rate of 12 inches per foot or 1 12 foot per inch. You can multiply 48 by 1 12 or divide 48 by 12. The result is 4 feet either way.

Classwork Example 2: 10 minutes Lesson 21

Classwork Exercises: 10 minutes Lesson 21

Classwork Exercises: 10 minutes Lesson 21

Lesson 21

10 cups ×( 4 𝑐𝑢𝑝𝑠 1 𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑡 ) = 40 quarts Lesson21 Closing In Exercise 2, what if it was set up this way: 10 cups ×( 4 𝑐𝑢𝑝𝑠 1 𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑡 ) = 40 quarts What is wrong with that set up? I can use rates between measurements to convert measurement in one unit to measurement in another unit. If the conversion factor is flipped upside down, the units will not cancel and the number won’t make sense
