Native Texans: Southeastern Peoples

The Caddo Peoples Organized into three confederacies, or alliances of people. Most advanced culture of all Texas Indians Lived in the Piney woods, in cone shaped buildings covered w/ cane/grass, along major rivers Major crops included squash, corn, beans, and sunflower seeds. Fished, hunted deer/small animals Used dogs for hunting “Tay-yas, tay-yas” generated the name TEXAS

The Atakapan Peoples Lived in five bands spread across coastal plains from Louisiana to Galveston Bay One band, the Bidais, lived on edge of Piney Woods between Brazos and Trinity Rivers Built permanent homes, grew corn Hunted deer, buffalo Another band, Akokisas, lived along Galveston Bay Hunted/gathered Fished from dug out canoes Moved in the fall to more permanent villages Hunted bear in the winter, traded dried fish

The Wichita Peoples Three Wichita tribes- Tawakonis, Wacos, Wichitas Tawakonis / Wacos settled along Brazos Shorter/darker than most Indians Men had tattoos around eyes, women tattooed bodies Farmed corn, pumpkins, squash, melons, beans, plums After fall harvest, spent winter hunting buffalo on the plains While hunting they lived in tipis
