Emotional Strength Training 3 Dealing with Anger Adapted from “Strong Kids” Curriculum for Grades 6-8

Learning Target I can understand anger and manage aggression.

Anger Anger is a normal feeling that everyone experiences. It’s important to deal with our anger in a way that doesn’t hurt ourselves or others. Aggression is using hurtful words or physical behaviors towards someone. Hitting Screaming Kicking Ignoring someone

Dealing with Anger Using aggression to deal with anger only leads to more problems. People who are often aggressive have problems making and keeping friends, doing well in school, getting along with teachers, and feeling happy.

The Anger Model Trigger- the situation that causes you to feel angry Interpretation- thinking about what has happened Emotional Reaction- what you feel about a situation Decision- making a choice about an action you will take Behavior- acting out the decision Consequence- the direct results of your behavior

Pair or Group Activity Match the step of the Anger Model to the correct event in the scenario. When you think you have correctly matched the steps to the events, raise your hand and your teacher will check your work. Afterwards, as a class, you will review each event in the scenario and explain how you know which step of the Anger Model it represents.

Act it Out Your teacher will pass out a card with an Anger Control Skill on it. Option A: Create a role-play showing how to use the skill. Option B: Describe a situation where you could use this skill. Option C: Create a mini-poster explaining how to use this skill when you get angry.

Closure On a half-sheet of paper, answer the following questions. What are some anger control skills? What is one situation where you could use one of the skills we talked about today?
