Synthesis Reaction Synthesis – 2 substances (reactants) combine to form a new substance (product). Substances are either atoms (elements) or compounds in this case. A + B  AB

Decomposition Reactions Decomposition – A single compound breaks into two or more simpler elements and/or compounds. AB  A + B

Single Replacement Reactions Atoms from one element replace atoms from another element (that is in a compound). AB + C  AC + B

Double Replacement Double replacement reaction – Atoms in 2 compounds trade places. AB + CD  AD + CB

Combustion Reaction In a combustion reaction a compound combines with oxygen the yield carbon dioxide and water. C5H9O + O2  CO2 + H2O

Balancing Chemical Equations Begin by taking an element “inventory” for reactants and products. Pick an element that only occurs once on each side. Determine which side (product or reactant) has fewer of that element and put the coefficient that will make each side equal in front of the molecule that the element is in. Update your inventory. (done when matches) Repeat steps 2 through 4 until only elements that occur more than once are left and balance them.

Balancing Chemical Reactions _____ Br2 + _____LiF  ____ LiBr + ____ F2 Reactants Products Br = 2 Br = 1 Li = 1 Li = 1 F = 1 F = 2

Balancing Chemical Reactions _____ Br2 + _____LiF  __2__ LiBr + ____ F2 Starting with Br (2 are on reactant side, so put a 2 in front of LiBr on product side to make Br equal on both sides) Reactants Products Br = 2 Br = 1 2 Li = 1 Li = 1 2 F = 1 F = 2

Balancing Chemical Reactions _____ Br2 + ___2__LiF  __2__ LiBr + ____ F2 Now fix Li on the reactant side (only one is there so you need to increase it to 2 to match the product side.) Reactants Products Br = 2 Br = 1 2 Li = 1 2 Li = 1 2 F = 1 2 F = 2
