Key Technical Data Standards S1000D – Technical Publications SCORM – Training Data GEIA Standards Similar To ISO Standards 927 Common Data Schema 10303 STandard for The Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP) 927-1 Logistics Product Data Implementation Model - LSAR STEP AP 239 Product Life Cycle Support - LSAR 649 Configuration Management 10007 Configuration Management 836 Data Std for Configuration Mgt AP 203 Configuration –Controlled Design 859 Data Management 10032 Reference Model of Data Management Message: IT guys will have to “suspend their disbelief”. Talking in general concepts, not IT absolutes The first two Standards have general consensus and are being harmonized Two major industry camps with over arching documents. There is some confusion and an appearance of duplication. Want to provide a quick overview of the two categories, discuss a key logistics data standard and recommend a path ahead SCORM -or the Sharable Content Object Reuse Model, is a collection and harmonization of specifications and standards that defines the interrelationship of content objects, data models and protocols such that objects are sharable across systems that conform to the same model for training. SCORM is actively working with S1000D to eliminate duplications and include elements and attributes used for training material in the S1000D standard. This collaboration is being accomplished through the Advanced Distributed Learning office and the United States Specification Implementation Group, Training sub-group. It should be encouraged and monitored until completion. S1000D is the International Standard for Technical Publications utilizing a common source database. There are currently 19 nations using this standard and more are considering it all the time. GEIA standards - The GEIA promotes the interests of the U.S. electronics, communications and information technology industries with regard to government markets, requirements, and technical standards. GEIA represents companies that create and apply innovative products, services, practices, technologies and integrated solutions to meet government needs. GEIA 927 - The latest draft for comment of the full GEIA 927 standard is now available for public review at the GEIA web site. GEIA-927 has been disassembled into a number of "views" to facilitate review by subject matter experts in various functional areas. Certain of the views are pertinent to more than one functional area. GEIA 927-1 – IS about Product data and very similar to the STEP AP 239 PLCS standard GEIA 649 describes Configuration Management data and so does ISO 10007. GEIA 859 describes Data Management and is very similar to IOS 10032 which describes a reference model for data management. Where these similarities represent duplication a single standard should be mandated and supported! 10-19 AM draft

EIA 927 & ISO 10303 (STEP) Comparison Both Are Industry Product Data Exchange Standards Deal With Data In A Neutral Format Required To Support A System Over Its Life Cycle Neither Is A Computer System Or Software Application Are Supported By A Family Of Specifications In Some Cases The Same Supporting Specifications, in others, Different Help To Integrate Supporting Specifications GEIA ISO 10303 STEP US Standard International Standard In Draft Form Published & In Use World Wide Model Of How Generic Data Elements & Their “Dimensions” Interrelate Deals With Data Concepts Regardless Of Application Or Use Example: Effectivity Date Dimension: Start, End, Start & End Range Dimension: Start, End, Start & End; Serial Numbers, Hull & Tail Numbers, Tech Directives/ECPs, Lots, etc, Functional Dimension: systems, functions Model For Describing Product Data For: Physical Characteristics – geometry/wireframe models, machining features, tolerances Processes – Process Plans for Machined Products Functional Characteristics – Finite Element Analysis Supported by Data Exchange Specifications (DEXs) For Specific Functions Or Communities Message: They Are Related But Different & Can Complement Each Other Because STEP Data Is Not Optimized To Cut Across Business Processes. Howard brings out a good point that STEP is not Designed to support business transactions but it does cut across all business processes related to product design, manufacture and support. The issue here is what do you mean by business transaction? It does support business transactions, it is just not a transaction based role. I content that transferring data across businesses is a business transaction and the most important kind to Lou. 10-19 AM draft

GEIA/STEP Proposed Path Ahead Align GEIA & STEP Efforts to Complement Each Other Initial Focus on Creating GEIA 927-1 as STEP AP 239 (PLCS) Data Exchange Standard (DEX) Industry Take Lead Through Netcentric Information System Initiative Services Support Current Army LOGSA Efforts to Ensure Joint Solution Focus Through Established OASIS & ISO Efforts Align GEIA & STEP Efforts to Complement Each Other 927 needs to be compatible with international standards Any missing requirements to be proposed as STEP updates 10-19 AM draft
