Emerging Mainland States Southeast Asian kingdoms were stable regions with their own ethnicity, language, and culture. In 1511 the Portuguese took control of port of Melaka and the Moluccas (The Spice Islands) from Muslim merchants. Port of Melaka Spice Islands
The Arrival of Europeans Portuguese set up small settlements, they did not have the resources (men, money, and ships) to colonize the region. Situation changed when English & Dutch arrived in early 1600s. Both were better financed than the Portuguese.
Impact on the Mainland Europeans did not have such success on the mainland of Southeast Asia because strong monarchs resisted foreign intrusion.
