Presentation transcript:

Cellular Respiration aka Aerobic Respiration Biology is so fun, getting energy from the sun. plants and animals both, need the sun for healthy growth! WooHoo!

What is Cellular Respiration? The process of using oxygen to convert the energy stored in glucose into more efficient energy stored in ATP. Or The process of making energy for the cell and your body to use

What is ATP and ADP? Both are energy storing molecules with one difference between them– the # of phosphates they have ADP = Adenosine Diphosphate ***What’s left after energy is released ATP = Adenosine Triphosphate ***Stores Energy

In what organelle does cellular respiration happen? In the Mighty Mitochondria

What reactants are needed for cellular respiration? Glucose + Oxygen

What products are made in cellular respiration? Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP Energy 7

The Equation! Word Form: Glucose + Oxygen ATP + Carbon +Water Energy Balance Chemical Equation: C6H12O6 + 6O2 ATP + 6CO2 + 6H2O Energy Dioxide Energy

How much ATP do you get? = 1 Glucose = 38 ATP

Who needs cellular respiration and ATP? ATP provides energy for every movement and every function of your body Cellular respiration occurs in ALL cells of ALL organisms to keep them alive: prokaryotes (bacteria) plants (autotrophs) animals (heterotrophs)

THE BIG PICTURE Glucose &

Anaerobic vs. aerobic Anaerobic means without oxygen (glycolysis) Produces little ATP ~ 2 ATP It is how our body makes most of the energy at the start of exercise Aerobic means with oxygen (Krebs cycle and ETC) Produces 20 times more ATP than glycolysis alone ~ 38 ATP Body relies on it during physical activities
