Welcome to Curriculum Night! Second Grade 2018-2019
First Grade vs. Second Grade One of the biggest differences between first grade and second grade is the accountability and responsibility that students will learn throughout the school year. This is something that is very important in order for students to be successful in my classroom. Please support this at home by reinforcing accountability and responsibility using the OWL binder. Birthday Celebrations In 2nd grade, we ask that parents handle birthday celebrations differently. Instead of a food treat please bring in a non-food item. All of second grade is following this idea. We have many different allergies and to be fair to all we would like to try something different. Here are some ideas we came up with: fun pencils, neat erasers, stickers sheets, gel pens, bubbles, etc. You could also come in to read one of your child's favorite stories to the class to celebrate their special day!

Literacy Curriculum (cont.) Letterland Research The use of characters and actions to teach phonics is supported by scientific research. The Letterland system is also in-line with research on memory and the way we learn. Each Letterland character has a personality and lives in a realistic environment filled with alliterative objects. By integrating phonics with life experience, it provides children with a systematic and motivating framework for learning all 44 sounds and their spellings and for developing full literacy. In Grade Two, students will learn more advanced spelling patterns, syllabification, and word structure. The program incorporates many reading and fluency activities, as well as motivational word games. There is an integrated assessment stand as well as an intervention section in this guide.

Homework Reading Every night your child should read for 20 minutes. This can be from a book at home or a school library book. Your child should alternate between reading aloud to you and you reading aloud to him/her. Oral reading fluency is an important skill for your child to practice daily, and your child also benefits from hearing your fluency as you read aloud. Please record the date, book title, and pages read on the yellow CMS Reading log. Spelling (Letterland) Students will be working with words throughout the year from word lists in a proven curriculum entitled "Letterland". Each week they will work with these words in class. Students will also be required to complete one written spelling activity at home. They must have their activity recorded or glued in their spelling notebook for me to see that they have completed the homework. It is your child's responsibility to bring home their spelling notebook nightly to complete their Letterland activities in preparation for our tests. Spelling homework will be due on Day 5. Math EnVision Math sheets will be sent home periodically throughout the week. Please complete with your child and turn in the next day.
