FvAF Reading Groups 1, 2, and 3 If you are in group one, focus on this guiding question: “What was the viewpoint of the Federalists concerning the ratification of the Constitution?” Fill box 1 with at least three things from the reading. If you are in group two, focus on this guiding question: “What was the viewpoint of the Anti-Federalists concerning the ratification of the Constitution?” Fill box 2 with at least three things from the reading. If you are in group three, focus on this guiding question: “Why did the Anti-Federalists want to include a bill of rights in the Constitution?” Fill box 3 with at least three things from the reading.

Group 1: Federalists Viewpoint The supporters of the proposed Constitution called themselves Federalists. For Federalists, the Constitution was necessary in order to protect the liberty and independence that was gained from the American Revolution. They believed that the three branches of the national government separated the powers and protected the rights of the people. They also believed that a listing of rights can be a dangerous thing. OR Federalists: supporters of the Constitution The Constitution protects liberty and independence. Three branches separate powers and protect rights of people. Believed listing rights [was] dangerous.

Group 2: Anti-Federalists Viewpoint People opposed to the ratification of the Constitution were called the Anti-Federalists. They were concerned that the Constitution gave too much power to the national government at the expense of the state governments. They were also concerned that, within the national government, the legislative and executive branches were too powerful. Anti-Federalists were also concerned that the Constitution lacked a specific listing of rights. OR Anti-Federalists: opposed ratification of the Constitution The Constitution give too much power to national government, not enough to the states. The legislative and executive were too powerful. Concerned about a lack of listing of rights.

Group 3: Why a bill of rights? Anti-Federalists were also concerned the Constitution lacked a specific listing of rights. They believed that a bill of rights was essential to protect the people from the federal government. The Revolutionary War had just been fought because the American people needed to defend their rights. With the war experience still in mind, the Anti-Federalists did not want a powerful national government taking away those rights. The lack of a bill of rights became the focus of the Anti-Federalist campaign against ratification. OR A bill of rights is essential to protect people from government. Just fought to defend rights. Bill of rights was focus of Anti- Federalist campaign against ratification.

The Compromise? Once the Federalists promised to add a ‘bill of rights’ to the Constitution, the united states were able to ratify the Constitution, changing us from the united states (plural) to the United States (singular). The first ten amendments to the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights. The next slide has an incomplete summary.

We’ll go in depth on these later.
