The word "brand" is derived from the Old Norse "Brandr" meaning "to burn". It refer to the practice of burning a mark onto your possessions/products.

When applied to people we call it stereotyping

Stereotypes are as old as human culture itself Stereotypes are as old as human culture itself. They reflect ideas that groups of people hold about others who are different from them.

What are some stereotypes you know of or have heard….

Stereotypes can be either positive or negative: In your workbook, list 2 negative and 2 positive stereotypes.

But most stereotypes tend to make us feel superior in some way to the person being stereotyped.

Stereotypes ignore the uniqueness of individuals by painting all members of a group with the same brush

They can also make it hard to identify the real you... In your workbook write your own definition of stereotypes.

Stereotype Definition: A fixed, commonly held notion of a person or group, based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behaviour or appearance.

Stereotypes of a group of people can affect the way society views them, and change society's expectations of them. With enough exposure to a stereotype, society may come to view it as a reality rather than something branded upon them.

a reality ignore Stereotypes most “brand” different “to burn” same brush burning their mark superior Stereotypes reflect ideas affect uniqueness expectations
