Students will be encouraged to choose topics and projects that provide real value to VA as an organization. Students will receive guidance and feedback on assignments from faculty moderators.

Is Supervisory Approval Required? https://vaww.infoshare.va.gov/sites/chio/VHAILG/SitePages/Home.aspx Is Supervisory Approval Required? This six-month program requires a substantial time commitment from the participants— approximately twelve hours per week. Most coursework is done on the student’s personal time. Supervisors agree to: 1. Release participant for online training sessions (percentage of time is determined locally). 2. Support participant’s work on projects.

Candidate Selection

How Are The Candidates Selected? Candidates are scored on the basis of the information provided on their application. The essay questions are particularly important, as the goal is to identify candidates who demonstrate leadership, enthusiasm and a strategic vision for improving healthcare through application of informatics principles and practice. Consideration is given to how a candidate’s participation in the program will not only support their personal and professional development but also enable them to contribute to VA’s mission and strategic goals. Involvement in VISN and national level work groups and projects is looked upon favorably as it demonstrates initiative, leadership and systems thinking. Ideally, we want to have an interdisciplinary and geographically dispersed group in the course, but we do not have any specific criteria or quotas addressing those elements.

VA Health Informatics Certificate Program (AMIA 10x10) The ideal candidate: Currently serves in a formal or informal leadership role in health informatics (HI) Can commit to devoting the time required to complete the entire six-month program Demonstrates devotion to improving patient care and care outcomes through information APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED:  Now – October 29, 2018 Course Start Date: January 7, 2019 Course End Date:  July 26, 2019

What does the Ideal Candidate Look like? Enrollment is competitive and will be limited to 35 VA staff in a leadership role in health informatics. Leadership can be demonstrated through informal roles, such as project leader or program lead, and is not specific to certain job titles.

Candidate Notification

Notification of Acceptance Accepted: You have been formally accepted into the program. Alternate/Wait-List: You have been accepted but as an alternate (may be placed in a future session if needed). Not Accepted: Unfortunately we were unable to accommodate you in this session due to the limited number of seats.

What if I was Not Accepted? We encourage all students to re-apply if they were not accepted! Due to limited number of seats, we regretfully cannot accept every applicant. Before you re-apply, we encourage you to take advantage of other informatics related training opportunities. Our team is happy to provide feedback on your application to determine where you can improve for a future application. Get involved with local, VISN & national committees and projects!

Essay Tips Your essay is heavily weighted in our scoring process. Please do not assume that we are aware of your skill set (i.e. spell out acronyms) Tell us your story! Focus on sharing a narrative of your skills and education – not a bulleted list of tasks. Answer each essay question and their sub-parts. Successful candidates will be able to describe past accomplishments and contributions, current involvement as well as vision and goals for future directions of informatics in VA. Please limit your response to 300 words or less for each essay question – we want you to be concise and not too brief. Be sure to check your essays for correct spelling, grammar and punctuation prior to submission. Remember that the focus of this course is a broad spectrum of informatics concepts and principles – it is not focused on data, data mining, SQL techniques, etc…
