North American civilizations Mississipian Civilizations- -“Mound Builders” - Hopewell civilization: 100 BC to 1000 AD Anasazi based on desert irrigation • Urban centers in cliffs for protection

Charleston area of Kanawha County,West Virginia Charleston area of Kanawha County,West Virginia. For perspective, the person in this photo is five feet tall. Archaeologists' work suggests that the mound was built between A.D.1 and 500 by the Hopewellian mound builders. At the base of the mound the excavators found a crematory basin, and higher up in the mound, they found at least four skeletons.
