8.4-5 and 6 Civil War Vocabulary

The law passed during the Civil War to create a military draft. Conscription The law passed during the Civil War to create a military draft.

Confederate States of America The 11 states that seceded from the Union formed a new country called the Confederate States of America or the CSA.

The states that remained in the United States were called the “Union”.

20 Slave Law Passed by the CSA, this law granted an exemption for slave owners from being drafted if they owned 20 or more slaves.

Total War This war strategy was developed by the Union late in the war to try and put an end to the long Civil War. This strategy was to involve soldiers, civilians and private property so to break the spirit of the South. Towns, private citizens and private property were destroyed to bring the south to its knees.

CSS Hunley 1st submarine used in battle was a sub built and used by the CSA. It sank the USS Housatonic, but also sank itself.

Emancipation Proclamation Issued on January 1st 1863, this order given by President Lincoln, ordered all slaves in the South to be Free.
