College of Integrated Science and Engineering Summer Orientation 2018

Mission The College of Integrated Science and Engineering encompasses programs whose common focus is solving problems that impact the world at large through both the application of science and technology and the consideration of the social context in which the problem sits.

Overview CISE is JMU’s newest college – founded in July 2012 Dean Dr. Bob Kolvoord Dean Dr. Jeff Tang Associate Dean Dr. Jeffrey Tang Associate Dean

Overview CISE has a range of applied science and technology programs Computer Science Dr. Sharon Simmons Department Head Engineering Dr. Kurt Paterson Integrated Science and Technology Geographic Science Intelligence Analysis Dr. Linda Thomas

Academic Rigor Our academic programs are challenging – they’re supposed to be. They will help you bring out your best and allow you to do things you didn’t know you could. All we ask is that you work hard – we will do the same. High Expectations High Performance Great Results

Academic Rigor “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Accordingly, a genius is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework.” Thomas Edison

Common Elements in CISE Use technology and/or science to address human problems, including non-technical issues Dedicated and available faculty Opportunities for research Environment/Renewable Energy Computing Cyberintelligence/Cybersecurity Global issue Small class sizes, especially in junior and senior years State-of-the-art equipment and facilities A passionate commitment to outstanding undergraduate education

Undergraduate Degree Programs B.S. in Computer Science B.S. in Engineering B.A. or B.S. in Geographic Science B.S in Integrated Science and Technology B.S. in Intelligence Analysis

Choosing a Major or Minor Many of our majors have overlapping topical areas (computing, environment, etc.) both within CISE and with other colleges (CSM, COB, etc.) You can change majors at any time Some students choose to double-major or add one or more minors Note that many courses have prerequisites, and some programs (e.g., Engineering, IA) have fairly rigid pathways

Study Abroad Opportunities Costa Rica – ISAT/Engineering Germany – GS/ISAT/CS/Engineering Haiti – GS Kenya/Tanzania – GS/ISAT/Engineering Malta – GS/ISAT/Engineering Thailand - GS UK (London) - GS Study Away - Silicon Valley

Undergraduate Research Engineering, Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT), and Intelligence Analysis all require capstone research projects Numerous opportunities to work with faculty on research projects Don’t be afraid to ask instructors about opportunities for research

Internships All programs strongly encourage internships and help students pursue internship opportunities in a variety of ways Internships may be paid, unpaid, or for course credit Internships in 14 states and 4 countries

After Graduation JMU Career and Academic Planning Graduate School Jobs with Businesses or Government Start-up Companies Service Work – Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc.
