This PowerPoint presentation will serve as an introduction to accessibility and the LPS Accessibility Procedure Document and Plan. It will be presented at the beginning of the classroom training session, followed by hands-on classroom training, review of resources, and an open lab.

Web accessibility refers to the inclusive practice of removing barriers that prevent access to websites by people with disabilities

WHY…. Why are we spending time with accessibility and changes to the site?

1 in 5 people in the United States self-identify as having a disability

Web Accessible Sites Benefit People with… Vision Impairments Hearing Impairments Mobility Impairments Cognitive Impairments • Screen reader • Closed caption • Keyboard use • Easy to understand • Color blind • Transcript • Alternate input • Intuitive navigation

Web Accessibility at LPS……Why Now? Providing equal access to LPS website to all people is important to LPS All documents that meet the following criteria will need to be accessible starting in 2018:  – Electronic content or data – Communicates LPS official business

Web Accessibility Procedure and Plan Lakeshore Public Schools (LPS) recognizes the importance of making its webpages accessible to all people. The goals of the Web Accessibility Procedure Document are: 1. Identify and adopt the specific technical standard(s) LPS will use to determine whether online content is accessible. 2. Designate a Web Accessibility Coordinator to coordinate and implement the Web Accessibility Procedure Document. 3. Inform visitors to the LPS website how they can report concerns regarding content accessibility.

Accessibility Procedure Document Defines accessibility standards for MISD website Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) Three levels of accessibility rating A Accessibility A Accessible standards represent high priority requirements for accessibility AA Accessibility AA Accessibility is the general standard used for accessibility and the requirement at LPS AAA Accessibility AAA Accessibility is the highest standard for websites which is often challenging to achieve

Accessibility Plan Accessibility audit two times each year All pages on the site will be reviewed for accessibility   Annual training for web content owners/editors All new content added to site must meet accessibility standards

What…. What needs to be changed to make our website accessible?

Four Principles of Accessibility Perceivable Operable Understandable Robust

Perceivable We need to give alternative ways to perceive the information to accommodate users who cannot use one or more of their senses. Alternative Text Closed Captions Transcripts Contrast Alternative to Color for Meaning

Operable The interface elements and navigation must be able to be used. Keyboard Accessible Slideshows can be Controlled

Understandable Information and navigation are presented in a way that users can understand.   Text is Readable Pages are Predictable Help Users Avoid Errors

Robust Information can be utilized by a wide variety of user software and devices. The content should remain accessible as technology evolves. Assistive Technology Plugins Compatibility

Common Accessibility Issues Use text alternatives with images Add captions & transcripts for videos Organize pages with headings Avoid using color for meaning Make sure there is sufficient contrast  Ensure sites can be zoomed  Keep your language simple  Create meaningful links

The Website from a New Perspective
