1763 - 1791: The Royal Proclamation, 1763, and the Québec Act, 1774 Brandon Thompson Native Studies 30

Hmm, what would you say are the most important documents in our time? Those fools forgot the Quebec act… The Royal Proclamation, of course! And, it was issued by King George III to establish a basis of government administration in the N American territories formally ceded by France to Britain It defines Canada's special relationship with Aboriginal people and sets out the basis in law for Aboriginal land ownership and other rights Royal Proclamation

Its quite chilly in here! .. It was meant to push Québec's boundaries into Aboriginal land located past the Great Lakes.. Could try closing the door for once… .. And from the British perspective, it had two goals: to keep French Canadian neutral in the coming uprising in the Thirteen Colonies, and to keep Aboriginal peoples on the side of the British. -- From the British perspective, it had two goals: to keep French Canadian neutral in the coming uprising in the Thirteen Colonies, and to keep Aboriginal peoples on the side of the British Quebec Act (later changed to Constitution Act in 1791) -- meant to push Québec's boundaries into Aboriginal land located past the Great Lakes Quebec prior to the Quebec Act in 1774

Well sonny, I am pretty old. Hey grandpa, your pretty old. So I got a question: What major issues or events were addressed due to the Royal Proclamation and Quebec Act? Well sonny, I am pretty old. So let me explain…

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE QUEBEC ACT!? What were the major issue or events addressed by the document? What events led to the document or documents in this section? Briefly describe them. For example, were the negotiators trying to settle a long conflict, gain allies, or transfer the rights to land so that Europeans could settle and Aboriginals could gain other perceived benefits? Thanks Grandpa! … BUT WHAT ABOUT THE QUEBEC ACT!? Royal Proclamation ..They wanted the transfer of the rights to land so that Europeans could settle and Aboriginals could gain other perceived benefits.. ..They did not want land deals to be made to protect the interests of the Aboriginal.. Britain wanted settlement within there colonies, but also wanted to ensure Aboriginals had their own land for reserve settlements Did not want land deals to be made to protect the interests of the Aboriginal transfer of the rights to land so that Europeans could settle and Aboriginals could gain other perceived benefits Any future negotiation with the Aboriginals was to be in done in public with representatives from Britain, and nobody else .. And any future negotiation with the Aboriginals was to be in done in public with representatives from Britain, and nobody else. ..Britain wanted settlement within there colonies, but also wanted to ensure Aboriginals had their own land for reserve settlements..

I’m getting there, Hold your horses… .. … Young people these days.. Thank you now. They believed they didn’t have enough land and aboriginals had more than enough to give away. I’m getting there, Hold your horses… .. … Young people these days.. Settlers were becoming upset by the British taking Aboriginal lands that they considered to be theirs, and considered the Québec Act to be one of the “Intolerable Acts", which were a direct cause of the American Revolution. Now it’s time for your after noon nap. Settlers were becoming upset by the British taking Aboriginal lands that they considered to be theirs, and considered the Québec Act to be one of the “Intolerable Acts", which were a direct cause of the American Revolution. Quebec after the Quebec Act in 1774

Hmm, now that it’s dated, what is the… OH, the theme is: Trying to co-exist and maintain there lifestyles through an ever-changing new world 1763 - 1791 What is the T Proclamation I. Royal II.Quebec Act

Current State of Affairs The proclamation also gave Britain the right to purchase Aboriginal hunting and fishing grounds, but gave Aboriginals the right to hunt and fish on these acquired lands This means the proclamation allowed Britain to buy land. And Aboriginals could and still currently hunt or fish freely on that purchased land. The Aboriginals owned the land given to them, and were entitled to resources within the land. As a Canadian the Aboriginals are covered under health care

Relationships between the Parties How did these documents affect the relationship between the Aboriginal peoples who signed them and the French or British colonial authorities, or the Canadian government? I know, it’s all forgiven! It gave the Aboriginal people a false sense of fairness. Since they did not understand it fully, they believed it to be fair. ..Eventually, it made the Aboriginals extinguish there their rights to the land, which in return forced them to become part of the colonizing or be condensed onto reserves. It made our relationships on-edge for some time. The agreements prior to 1763 were responsible for “great fraud and abuses” in obtaining land from Aboriginals.. ..It gave the Aboriginal people a false sense of fairness. Since they did not understand it fully, they believed it to be fair… The agreements prior to 1763 were responsible for “great fraud and abuses” in obtaining land from Aboriginals.

This is offensive because Britain knew the Aboriginals did not understand the concepts, but they went through with it regardless. Hmm, Was there anything that might offend certain Aboriginals today? Cause I don’t want them mad.. This is offensive because it is not sociably acceptable to call first nations “Indians”. Both the Royal Proclamation and the Quebec Act took advantage of the Aboriginal people, because they did not understand the concepts of Land Ownership. Within the Royal Proclamation, Aboriginals were referred to as “Indians”.
