Definition/characteristics of a Memoir: A subcategory of autobiography, a memoir presents more of a slice of life, focusing on some particular aspect of the writer’s life, with the chosen events selected for examination of meaning. It is nonfiction written as fiction, with the author attempting to recreate settings, dialogue, etc., as accurately as possible. The author chooses incidents that have brought the writer to a new understanding or view of the events. The goal is that the reader will also arrive at new understanding.

“The Glass Castle” Setting – New York City Read and annotate the selection with a focus on character information about the author and her mother. Think about how you would describe each.

Character analysis What word or words would you use to describe the author? Her mother? What textual evidence supports that description? Make a t-chart and list at least three pieces of evidence for each character. Are these direct or indirect descriptions by the author? If they are indirect, what type are they?
