Presentation transcript:

Let’s recap! Why the Disarmament conference fail? What happened as a result of this failure? (e.g Germany) Which do you think was a greater failure for the League; Manchuria or Disarmament?

A-by-ssi-nia! L/O: To be able to explain why Mussolini attacked Abyssinia and how the League reacted Joke: Knock Knock, who's there? Abyssinia. Abyssinia who? Abyssinia when I get back! The Abyssinian invasion and the way the League dealt with it is often seen to be the ‘final nail in the coffin’ for the League. Who was Mussolini? Why was Italy important? Italian fascist dictator (like Hitler and Franco) The leader of Italy from 1922 Italy were one of the main powers in the League of Nations Italy had tried to invade Abyssinia in 1896 They had been defeated and humiliated! Mussolini wanted revenge! (and land and to go down in History!) Where is Abyssinia? Use page 44 to explain where Abyssinia is. Which countries does it border? What is Abyssinia called today? (Use an atlas) Who was Haille Selassie? The leader of Abyssinia in the 1930s!

Role Play! You will act out the crisis in Abyssinia using the role provided. M = Mussolini L = League HS = Haile Selassie B = britain F: France You could have 1 person playing Britain and France! Ms Rio can take a part too! Think about how you would react in different situation and act it out! I look forward to seeing it when I return!

Mussolini and Hitler’s actions Actions of the League, Britain and France December 1934 November 1936 Task 2: Draw your own timeline line this one and add all the events that take place and by whom! Then think: How did the USA and Britain undermine the League? Why was the Hoare-Laval Pact so damaging to the League? Can the League’s actions be justified in any way? Explain! Try to consider both sides!

Do this on Monday! – 20 mins test! Exam style questions: 1) Explain why the depression affected the League of Nations (6 marks) (2/3 well explained reasons!) 2) Explain why the Disarmament Conference had failed by 1934. (6 marks)
