Hi, We appreciated the article on Wireless Personal Area Networks & IEEE P802.15 in the Bluetooth SIGnal Issue no. 2, Sep99! Now we are wondering how to write a SIGnal article as an update to this article and/or the standards-making work we are doing in the IEEE Project 802.15 Working Group for WPANs. Here are some questions to start the dialog: Q1 Who should we contact and/or work with if we have an idea for an article that the SIGnal Readers might like? Q2 What are the author rules? Q3 The Bluetooth SIGnal Issue no. 2 Article is 383 words. Is the typical word count that is considered? Q4 It appears that the next placement is for the 28 January 2000 issue of the Bluetooth SIGnal or Issue no. 4. When is/was the deadline for the Issue no. 4? When is no. 5 scheduled? Q5 Do you have themes for each of the up and coming Issues? Best Regards, -- Ian Gifford giffordi@tycoelectronics.com Ian Gifford, M/A-COM, Inc. Ian Gifford, M/A-COM, Inc.

Objectives of the Marketing Committee doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/032r0 February 2000 February 2000 Objectives of the Marketing Committee =Relevant Fully support the WPAN standards activities being conducted in the IEEE 802.15 Working Group. Contribute technical resources to facilitate convergence and consensus on technical specifications. Provide resources to establish and demonstrate product interoperability. Create and maintain liaisons with other selected marketing and standards bodies bodies. Foster two-way communications between suppliers and consumers of WPAN products. Clearly & distinctly differentiate the IEEE WPAN wireless activities It is noted that if we choose a candidate from industry e.g., Bluetooth SIG, HomeRF, Kodak, etc. we will have access to marketing. General Submission Rules doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/032r0 February 2000 February 2000 General Submission Rules The length of articles for Bluetooth SIGnal varies, but it should not normally exceed two pages. As a general rule, a one-page article should be about 700 words, as this will leave room for an accompanying picture or graph. Pictures should be sent in eps format if possible, otherwise TIFF format is acceptable.” Roger Peacock From: Roger Peacock [SMTP:roger@pyramid.se] Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2000 6:43 AM To: Gifford, Ian C. Subject: SIGnal article Hello Ian, Thanks for your interest in writing an article for Bluetooth SIGnal on the IEEE Project 802.15 Working Group for WPANs. The length of articles for Bluetooth SIGnal varies, but it should not normally exceed two pages. As a general rule, a one-page article should be about 700 words, as this will leave room for an accompanying picture or graph. Pictures should be sent in eps format if possible, otherwise TIFF format is acceptable. The coming issues for year 2000 are planned for publication on or just after (depending weekends and holidays) the first day of Feb, April, June, August, Oct and December. The deadline for articles is three weeks before the publication date. However, as the newsletter is about 8 pages long, this does not guarantee that a particular article sent by the deadline will appear in the next issue; it may be kept for a subsequent issue. An Editorial Board exists to evaluate the suitability of an article where this is thought necessary. I take the responsibility of editing text, either from a language point of view or adjusting length if this is required. Articles in Bluetooth SIGnal are not published according to predetermined themes. The aim is that over the year, as many relevant aspects of the development and application of the Bluetooth wireless technology as possible are covered according to the material available from volunteer or designated authors. Reader interest is also taken into consideration. Regards, Roger. Roger Peacock Editor Bluetooth SIGnal Pyramid Communication AB Phone: +46 42 38 68 00 Fax: +46 42 38 68 68 roger@pyramid.se The MC suggests we use a ~300 word recurring column format vs. submitting single articles e.g., “IEEE Corner” or “WPAN Update”. Now imagine that this bubble has a radius of 10 meters. This invariable bubble is called your Personal Operating Space (POS). Now look around in your bubble. How many electronic devices do you see? How many wires do you see? The Bluetooth technology provides wireless connectivity among these devices within (or moving into) your POS. These wirelessly connected devices create a network called a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). In the Wide Area Network (WAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), and Local Area Network (LAN) hierarchy, the WPAN’s scope is the smallest and least developed. In March of 1998, the WPAN Study Group was formed. The study group’s goal was to investigate the need for a wireless network standard for devices within a POS. In May of 1998, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed. In March of 1999, the WPAN study group became IEEE 802.15, the WPAN Working Group. The working group’s goal is to define a wireless communications standard for a PAN, focusing on low power consumption, small size, and low cost. In July of 1999, the Bluetooth SIG released the Bluetooth 1.0 Specification. WPAN of the Future The obvious applications of a WPAN are in the office workspace. With the Bluetooth technology, your essential workspace electronic devices will be wirelessly networked together. These could include your desktop, mobile computer, printer, handheld device, mobile phone, pager, portable stereo, etc. Imagine wirelessly checking e-mail in an airport by connecting to data access points or wirelessly printing documents from the printer in the back of the plane. The less obvious applications of a WPAN are outside of the office. Imagine an oven that sends a message to the TV you are watching when your meat loaf is done, or a handgun that only fires when an authorized person uses it. In today’s environment, information is our most valuable commodity. In an electronic future with smaller, cheaper, and more powerful devices, the speed and convenience at which information is accessible will be exponentially more important. By creating a WPAN of these devices, the Bluetooth technology enables a future where a lifetime of knowledge may be accessed through gateways worn on the body. The data rate will be high enough, 20 Mbps or more, to satisfy a set of multimedia industry needs for WPAN communications. The project will also address the Quality of Service capabilities required to support multimedia data types.” WPAN-HR PAR Purpose This article is timely in that the Bluetooth SIG will have submitted their Marketing Requirements Document (MRD) for Radio2. The Article should link HR & Radio2 and our other candidate protocols. Ian Gifford, M/A-COM, Inc. Ian Gifford, M/A-COM, Inc.
