Subjects and Predicates WHO The subject is the or the The predicate is what WHAT HAPPENS

Subject Tim ran to the store. This is about Tim going to the store. Therefore the subject is Tim. The subject of the sentence is who, whom, or what that particular sentence is about. It also tells who preforms the action.

Predicate Tim ran to the store. “ran to the store” is the predicate. Ran is the verb. The verb is the main part of the sentence. It tells about any actions that might take place in the sentence. In this sentence there is also a prepositional phrase. This is a phrase that tells where something is or where it is going.

Predicate Tim is very tall. “Is very tall” is also a predicate. It tells about Tim using an adjective.

Unusuals In a sentence like “Come in, now” you will not see a subject. It is said that there is an understood “you”. So, it really DOES have a subject. Sometimes the subject comes after the predicate like “ Did I forget something?” I is the subject and did, the first half of the verb, is before it.
